I am probably mediocore in computer literacy. I am running McAfee right now, bought the security suite and only use the AV. I find firewalls a hassle. We do alot of online gaming and I have found in the past the firewalls prevent alot of this OR I just don't know how to use them properly. I am in the market for new AV software, McAfee Sub. running out at the end of this month. My main concerns are viruses and spyware. I am leaning toward PC-Cillin or Panda Titanium. I am running XP and would really like something that is very user friendly. Any suggestions?
leaning toward, PCCillin and Panda, Trend Micro's PC Cillin is the better.
Since you prefer no firewall however you might consider AVAST because PC Cillin does come with one. The free version of AVAST is excellent but the pro version is more configurable.
I think that Trend Micro's PC-Cillin is good because it's not such a resource hog, and it comes with a good firewall included. I'm not sure how easy their firewall is to configure, but their tech support has been very helpful (to my friends) in the past. You can explain your situation and see what they recommend.
You might also want to check out BlackICE Defender for serious online security. I've heard amzing things about it, and I think there's a free trial version. (You can also search CNET for any related postings. I think one of the editors wrote an article on it.)
I hope this helps you! ![]()

is recommended to use. It's one of your defense.

If your security software has firewall application included, try to read its manual/online help on how to configure it to allow what you required to use. First use the default settings then slowly re-configure it the way youw want it run.
I've tried norton, mcafee and am now using pccillin.
in my humble opinion trend pccillin is the best of the three. norton finds stuff but, if you want to get rid of the virus you have to pay them extra - which is a ripoff. If it's supposed to stop the darn things in the first place why do you end up having to spend extra for the service you already paid for? Can't recommend them.
mcafee would always send me to the upgrade page whenever I wanted to go to the update page, which as you may know, the upgrade page costs money. it always seemed to mcafee that my subscription, that was only three months old, was hopelessly out of date. then one day last month a virus took over my mcafee program rendering it useless. no firewall or virus scan. couldn't even reinstall it from the disk that i bought. mcafee was absolutely no help at all. can't recommend them either.
But, trend pccillin seems to be the answer for me. It's simple, the firewall actually works! I never have any problems gaming, downloading, chatting, whatever. it's very non invasive. and the virus scan works like a charm! Finds 'em, attempts to clean the file first, than if it can't it tries to delete the infected file, and if that fails it quarantines the infected file. effortlessly! And all in REAL TIME! Yeah. You can then delete the file yourself or pccillin will do it in 15 days. I really like this program because it's simple (duh, for me that's great), it doesn't ask you questions about stuff that you don't have any idea about, and it does what it is supposed to do! I can recommend this program! oh yeah, it's rated #1 at cnet and it's cheap! i run xp pro sp2 and they get along just fine; no fighting!
Thanks everyone!
Really appreciate all the great advice. Kahe55, a special thank you for your detailed message. I also had virus disable my virus scan (mcafee). I think I am going to go with pccillin, sounds like a good one for me. Really appreciate you all and this site.
Thanks a Million!!!!
