Thoughts ??

by bob b - 3/11/05 12:31 PM In reply to: Microsoft claims KB891711 is required for Win98 and WinME... by mbpetersen

Ya I have a thought.

It's all part of the MS MASTER PLAN of how to force the users of these old OS's to go to XP.(drive them loony)

I use w98se.

I got a notice of that update over a month ago.
When I read the bulletin it said it applied to my OS and to get it from WINUPD.

A visit to WINUPD said...NOPE.
A visit a few days later said...NOPE.
A visit a few days later said...NOPE.

So I chased it around the web for a while...NADA

As far as I can tell it's not installed on this machine and it's sure not in my start-up group and WINUPD still says I don't need it.

So the msg is..switch to XP and all this non-sense goes away. :-)

by Justmehere - 3/18/05 1:48 PM In reply to: Microsoft claims KB891711 is required for Win98 and WinME... by mbpetersen

Hi, I have Windows 98 SE and have kept current with all Windows Critical Updates. I have Kb891711 in my start up. I'm so confused as to what to do about it. What have you learned sinced you posted your reply to: "Microsoft claims KB891711 is required for Win98 and WinME..."? Any suggestions would be so appreciated....or if you could point me in the right direction. I checked out your suggested link, but am still confused about what to do.

Thanks!
JMH

I have ....

by Ken Deyell - 3/18/05 2:51 PM In reply to: Kb891711 on Windows 98 SE by Justmehere

followed this thread with interest cause I was concerned also.I am replying to your post because my operating system is the same as yours W98SE,and what I did was simply "uncheck" KB891711.exe in the "startup" list, and I have not experienced any unusual problems. There is another post here that states even by "unchecking" it as I did and others that you still benifit from the "security" fix it was intended for.HTH

KB891711 ms patch

by jhoda - 3/22/05 11:18 AM In reply to: Some clarification from Microsoft by dehayd

I spent hours uninstalling Norton System works never dreaming that a Microsoft patch would be the culprit. When I finally uninstalled all my other applications i went one by one in the start menu until i deleted KB891711 and found the problem. Microsoft owes us all an apology for this one but to date they officially have not updated ther web site.

kb891711 problems

by rosends - 3/11/05 2:19 PM In reply to: kb891711.exe by phil66

Thaank you all for having this thread. I have been a happy slave, updating when Microsoft tells me to and asking "how high" when they tell me to jump. I updated last week and suddenly, could not open Internet Explorere! I got a BSOD...repairs didn't work and I was faced with the reinstall option. I wasn't happy...

Using an old version of Opera I found this thread. No one's problem was exactly the same as mine, but it identified a recent Microsoft patch as a possible problem. I have taken it out of the msconfig list and found it in the registry (only under runonce, but that's something). And now it seems to work (I'm using my IE to type this). I was getting nowhere fast with Microsoft and you guys (at least so far) did the trick.

Kudos to all of you. Now I'm just back to being a slave to Microsoft, and I fear the next critical update for 98se notice I get...

KB891711.exe

by BobbyWoontz - 3/14/05 2:37 PM In reply to: kb891711.exe by phil66

I downloaded the 2 updates (KB891711 & KB888113)from the M$ update page on March 11th. Today, the 14th, the KB891711.exe showed on the startup page. I have Windows ME, and today I simply ran a System Restore back to the last checkpoint before March 11th, which was March 10th on my computer. Viola, everything is gone and the 2 updates are back on the M$ update page ready to be downloaded again. Not this time.

Bobby, the KB888113

by roddy32 Moderator - 3/14/05 2:51 PM In reply to: KB891711.exe by BobbyWoontz

is a critical update according to Microsoft and is not the one that is being disputed. The KB891711 is the one being disputed. Here is the Microsoft article about the KB88813.

You're right Roddy. I'll update it right away. But, the KB891711 stays put until they figure out why it's in the startup menu.

About this, i´ve read in Microsoft´s site that we need to download the update manualy, but I believe that you´ll have some problems on instalation.

HI all I called Microsoft and here is the fix.

by ronmlvn - 3/16/05 4:59 PM In reply to: Hy, by jeffnamor

I have windows 98se I installed the updates and had a problem with my computer rebooting to windows, I used goback to revert back to and hour before the install. then reinstalled the second update fist, had the same problem, used goback again, then reinstalled the first update and no problem, I called Microsoft at this number free security call, 1-866-pcsafety
1-866-72723389
I told the person what was happening, they told me to installed the updates and then go into safe mode and then when computer is up and running go to msconfig and uncheck the box with this number KB891711, they said you don't need it running in the task bar, and the security will still work.
