Clicking on link in Outlook mail opens TWO browser windows

by adambravo - 1/19/04 6:26 AM

Here's the situation: I used to be an SBC Yahoo subscriber, which included their browser. I preferred Microsoft Explorer, however, and went in and changed all the file associations I could find for the SBC Browser back to IE. Now, however, when I click on a link in a message in Outlook 2003, it opens two IE windows. How do I get back to just one window?

Just a WAG.

It's a mysterious thing, that Windows registry. I don't think this is a MS Office problem, so this might be the wrong forum.
The only thing I can advice:
(1) make a backup of the registry (and know how to restore it, if necessary). This is OS dependent, I think.
(2) Change all the items you changed from SBC to IE back to SBC one by one. If it doesn't effect your problem, change it back and go to the next one.

I assume you'll find the one that causes the second window. Then delete that in stead of changing it back to IE, and see the (hopefully good) effect.

Do it carefully, and step by step, so that you can always undo any more fatal change. In case of errors, and if all else fails, restore the backup and try again.

Wouldn't it have been better to use the official uninstall of that other browser?

You'd have been better off uninstalling the SBC browser thru Add/Remove Programs. You may want to reinstall it over itself, then uninstall it and launch IE. IE should then ask you if you want to make it your default browser.
