Microsoft to axe Windows 2000 security upgrades

by frazzledsuzy - 3/3/05 6:00 AM

I found this article http://www.vnunet.com/news/1160791 this morning and thought I would post it.It seems MS is at again,(what else new?) they are going to be stopping all security updates for Windows 2000 early this year in an effort to get those who have not yet upgraded to XP. I say it is just another marketing scam to get use that don't use XP to switch because no one is buying XP except when they get a new computer and Billy boy just wants to get every penny he can get for XP before Longhorn comes out next year

Can you be more specific?

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 3/3/05 6:13 AM In reply to: Microsoft to axe Windows 2000 security upgrades by frazzledsuzy

Internet Explorer is not "Windows 2000" but an application which you can replace. So IE/OE and such apps will cease to get updates. Is this your beef?

However, the OS itself has received the needed updates and if not, please point to an OS issue that needs fixing. Again, IE and OE and such applications are not "the OS."

Write more.

Where in did I say OE or IE? I have a I.T. background and I was referring to the OS. Or may be just because I am a woman you think I am stupid? I every degree that there is in computers plus I am mcse certified. Or may be MR. computer geek you feel just a little bit threaten because us woman are starting to take control in areas that where once dominated by you men?

The OS is one thing.

I asked if you meant the items that you see in the press. The press is making an issue about IE/OE and that firewall that no other OS is getting (pre-XP ones...)

The OS is very patched up and stable so I wonder what security issue you are writing that isn't being addressed.

I'll ignore your rant as it is just that. I truly want to know what your concern is.

Cheers,

Bob

Win 2000 is near the end of its life cycle...

by Edward ODaniel - 3/3/05 1:18 PM In reply to: Microsoft to axe Windows 2000 security upgrades by frazzledsuzy

(5 years old this month) and this has been well known for quite some time. Microsoft certainly never kept this secret ( http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/default.mspx ). Microsoft is not the only company that does this. Have you tried to get product updates for WordPerfect 6 for DOS recently? How about product updates for old (read outdated and supplanted by newer versions) scanner software or modem software such as Delrina WinComm?

There comes a point where it is not economical to continue to pay people to program fixes and service packs for software that was replaced by a newer version as Win 2000 was by XP. Microsoft's service pack life cycles are and have been well documented too www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/servicepacks.mspx and not just for Operating Systems but for applications too http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifesupsps

This lack of future support after the lifecycle ends isn't any conspiracy. All commercial companies tend to be in business for maximized profits and Microsoft is no exception although Microsoft has often extended support if the situation demanded it as it did for DOS and for Win 98.

WinXP will be a end of its lifecycle like Win2K...

by chris_cjgs - 3/5/05 12:39 AM In reply to: Win 2000 is near the end of its life cycle... by Edward ODaniel

Hi,

WinXP lifecycle end is due 31st December 2006.

This means WinXP is only 21 months to go and then to Longhorn.

Therefore, I don't think there is any point worrying about Win2000's end as from 31st March 2005.

There will still be critical 'Windows Updates' after that date on Win2000 as only on very urgent security issues even though the OS as no longer supported.

Other than that, no more general support except for website self-help knowledge base on issues of problems and how to etc.

I am not going to upgrade to WinXP just because it is the near end as my PC network is getting old too.

If Win2000 Network is doing fine then why fix it and you don’t have to do what Microsoft wants you to do.

I would rather wait another two years until a new big PC in the future. Hopefully the Longhorn be installed by then.

Anyway, I already got a laptop on WinXP SP2 and without a problem.

YES!

But the items that are not going to receive updates are not important to the OS. Software applications such as IE/OE and what else?
