Consequences of an Internet-connected car?

In my recent column, Implications of the Internet-connected car, I suggested what might happen once all of our cars are connected to the Internet. What do you think are other common tasks we do at our computers that would migrate to our cars?

It's bad enough seeing car drivers holding mobile phones to their ears whilst driving along at 60 - 70 MPH, single handed! This is of course totally illegal but despite this, it is quite common in UK, to see car drivers, heavy goods vehicle drivers and even Police drivers engaging in this practice.
I've even seen one stupid idiot on the Motorway, with a cigarette in one hand, mobile phone in the other and steering his car with his knees !!!
I dread to think of the consequences of having an Internet connected vehicle - drivers surfing the net on a laptop, at 70MPH - EEK!!

This may explain why some people view prospective technologies, that they have not even seen yet, with alarm.
There were those who said the same kinds of things about power steering, cruise control, and GPS, not to mention airplane auto-pilots.
An Internet connected car will bear about as much similarity to an Internet connected PC or cell phone as those do to an Internet connected refrigerator. To paraphrase the emperor, let us build the future one application at a time, my citizen, one application at a time.
In any case, given the value, not to say necessity, of connecting cars to the Internet, doing so is economically mandatory. Some will use it well, others not, but use it they will. Protesting it will have about as much effect as protesting global warming or gravity.
Some parts of your future are already locked-in. Get over it.

Are people forgetting that cars do not drive by themselves? A driver should put at least 90% of his/her attention towards driving. Curves in the roads, uneven pavement, speed limits, traffic, weather, sun glare, passengers, etc. all demand that the driver continuously make minor adjustments to his/her driving.
Even today, I see people tapping on their laptops and PDAs, chatting on their cell phones, shaving, applying makeup, eating breakfast, writing notes, reading newspapers, etc. Just yesterday, the car ahead of me almost slammed into the center barrier of the NJ GSP at 75 mph. As I passed him, I saw that he was looking for something (probably cell phone) on the car floor.
Unless, the primary function (driving) of the driver can be automated, a major distraction like the internet will be disastrous.

I've had a mobile hotspot in my truck for 2 years.Mobile wifi routers that work from data cards have been around for a while.I use a verizon rev a evdo card with a mobile router and have a dsl like connection most places I go.One of the things I do is realtime navigation with Google earth,way cool.I can also watch tv anytime I want via Slingbox.So mobile internet is already a reality.But you dont need a data card or mobile router to have tv or google in your car,my cellphone(xv6700)can do these things as well.
