Jeep blows fuse when stopping...
by Wolvie56X - 7/31/09 6:10 PMok have a new issue here, also a new user here, but it happened on Monday(7-27-09) to me, was working fine all weekend and well, never had many issues for as long as ive had it
heres the Jeep info: 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limit, I6 4.0L, 305,000 miles now, yeah i know, shes been awesome to me
heres the issue:
my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited has been blowing the same fuse for a week now, but it seems to only happen the the vehicle comes to a stop.
its the PCM fuse, which also has the automatic lights, instrument panel, radio amplifier and the vehicle body panel
i think there may be a few more on there, but its a really important fuse for the jeep, when it blows, the computer goes dead
we checked every open wire, the radio wires, the disconnected amp wires, the battery teminals and wires, checked to see if the fuse box was grounded properly, we are complete stumped right now
when the vehicle is moving, there are no problems, but when we come to a light or stop sign, it goes dead
and only that fuse is being blown
before this issue, we were never able to use the auto lights, they would just keep flickering instead of staying on and the interior lights could not be used, if turned on, they would go right out, but not blow the fuse
the vehicle shows no signs of any issues other then coming to a stop and the fuse blowing
im at my whits end, i have no idea and i hate the idea of buying a new vehicle if this is something i can fix

Questions:
Does that fuse blow every single time when you come to a stop?
Does the severity of the stop i.e. a hard stop as opposed to a normal gradual stop have any weighting as to when the fuse blows?
Always check and eliminate the simple & easy-to-do stuff first when diagnosing problems.
My reasoning (educated guess) for asking the above questions is that there could be a pinched or rubbed-through wire down by your brake pedal assembly. The electrical harness is routed very near the moving parts of the brake pedal arm, I would check that area very closely first.
As for your automatic lights, the following is from my 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee factory service manual.
AUTO HEADLAMP SYSTEM CHECK
ACTION: Headlamp switch to OFF position; Apply a bright light to the Photocell Light Sensor; Ignition switch to RUN.
NORMAL RESULTS: Tail and license lamps OFF; Front park and headlights OFF.
ACTION: Headlamp switch to AUTO position; Cover Photocell Light Sensor; Wait 30 seconds.
NORMAL RESULTS: Tail and license lamps ON; Front park and headlights ON.
ACTION: Apply a bright light to the Photocell Light Sensor; Wait 30 seconds.
NORMAL RESULTS: Tail, license, front park and headlights OFF.
ACTION: Cover the Photocell Light Sensor and wait for lights to turn ON; Wait 15 seconds, turn ignition switch OFF.
NORMAL RESULTS: Lights turn OFF after a time delay.
AUTO HEADLAMP SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS
CONDITION: Headlamps stay on all the time.
POSSIBLE CAUSE: (1) Photocell circuit open, check resistance between pin 8 and 10. (2) Photocell not plugged in. (3) Resistance between pin 8 and 10 is less than 1k and headlamps on.
CORRECTION: (1) Repair wiring. (2) Connect photocell connectors. (3) Replace module.
CONDITION: Headlamps do not illuminate.
POSSIBLE CAUSE: (1) Blown fuse. (2) Pin 9 not grounded when switched to auto headlamp position. (3) Resistance between pin 8 and 10 is more than 10k and headlamps off.
CORRECTION: (1) Replace fuse. (2) Repair circuit ground. (3) Replace module.
CONDITION: Headlamps activate prematurely or experience delayed deactivation.
POSSIBLE CAUSE: (1) Faulty photocell.
CORRECTION: (1) Replace photocell.
CONDITION: Headlamps flash immediately while driving between shadows and light with headlamp switch in AUTO position.
POSSIBLE CAUSE: (1) Faulty module.
CORRECTION: (1) Replace module.

as for a hard stop, i always stop for the 2 seconds at a light and or stop sign before proceeding
i will be checking around the brake pedal today as well as trying to get to the harness along the vehicle body
thank you all for the help in advance, i do live right next to an advance auto parts and an autozone, within 300 yards from me, but that does me no good, because they are both on a very busy road and id have to stop multiple times to get the Jeep to them
its a pain in the butt i tell ya, just hoping someone who has had this same issue sees this or someone can point me in the right direction

on that circuit are the following:
Instrument Cluster,
Body Controller,
Vehicle Theft Arming Light,
Automatic Headlights,
Diagnostic Connector
and the Radio Amplifier
all of the following was working fine, checked every single wire and ground, but once again, when its been running and moving, coming to a stop blows the fuse

Taking apart engine fuse box
by Wolvie56X - 8/1/09 9:05 AM In reply to: Ok. Changed O2 sensor by Wolvie56XOk. We are taking apart the engine fuse box now. Tracing the wire that goes between that fuse, the relay and going to put in a shorter new one that we KNOW is not shorting out anywhere. Wish us luck!!
Getting ready to torch the jeep now

We are checking all the fuse connections in the fuse box now. The fuse that keeps blowing is the loosest of the fuses that we have checked. Not sure if it's gonna help. We changed the relays around as well. Rechecked every fuse in the entire jeep.
We are losing all hope now. Any have any ideas as what to do now??

i kept googling different wordings on my iPhone and i finally found this, a guy on there was saying how his jeep was having the same exact issues i was having, spent tons of money to try and fix it, nothing worked, wellllllll, the number 1 reason the PCM/ASR fuse blows?? a short with the O2 sensor, so the one i just bought and spent $70 on? nothing wrong with it, it was the other one rubbing on the driveshaft
i feel like a complete idiot, because that was one of the first things i should have checked after the Auto Zone guy told me there was a short with the O2 sensor, he said it was the first one, but i STILL should have checked the rear one
wow, i typed alot today, i just hope this helps someone someday!!!
