In order for me to upgrade to Vista, I will have to...

by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator - 2/1/07 5:02 PM

In order for me to upgrade to Vista, I will have to do this to my PC:

- Upgrade to a faster CPU
- Upgrade to a better graphics card
- Upgrade to a larger hard drive
- Add more RAM (how much more?)
- Add a DVD-ROM or better
- Two or more of the above
- Dump it and get a whole new computer
- Nothing at all. I'm Vista ready!
- No Vista for me! (why not?)
- Others (what is it?)

No Vista for me!

1 There are no perceived benefits.
2 The security benefits above my current level could only be got in the Ultimate Edition.
3 I use some old programs which work in XP but not in Vista.
4 As an honest user I don't want to be treated as a potential criminal by the DRM system.
5 Pretty visual effects are not worth £200.
6 I have suffered enough from Microsoft's assumption that they know what I want better than I do. MS Word in particular is good at demonstrating this.
I do have a PC capable of running Vista.

Too much Microsoft for me!

by rfriendship - 2/2/07 5:52 AM In reply to: No Vista for me! by irdac

I have had a quick look at the current Poll situation and can see there are many folk who feel as I do about Microsoft having the Worlds' users by the short and curlys. True, its given modern computing to many many people, but I believe its time for a change, and Linux would be my choice also, for the reasons others here have stated.
I wouldn't be able to use some of my peripheral hardware with Vista, particularly my Canon SCSI document scanner which is now 11 years old, and which functions fine under XP but would not operate with Vista. Thats just one small reason.
Regards to all,
Bob F.

Linux Anyone?

by blue51557 - 2/2/07 7:32 AM In reply to: No Vista for me! by irdac

DRM and the whole 'do it our way, or no way at all' mind set of MS reminds me of Apple in the 1980's. They too wanted total control of the computer world, and that caused the development of the PC as we know it. why do I think Linux is going to eventually eclipse MS.

No Vista for me

I'm running Ubuntu. It does everything I want and don't need big brother looking over my shoulder.

Re: No Vista for me!

Once upon a time my life was controlled by Microsoft. I have Win98, second edition. It was my line to the internet and thus to writing courses, other writers and writing lists. I was jacked around by McAfee and Norton in that each said they'd make my OS safe. Any time I had a real problem and ran to them for customer support I discovered just how adrift I really was. Same with Microsoft. I never could a straight answer from them on any given topic at any given time. Then of course it became prohibitive to keep throwing money for each call I made. Pretty soon I was spending a small fortune on virus removal.

I talked to a number of people about upgrading to XP. They wanted to sell me everything from a new computer to simply the basic XP OS, telling me my system would work just fine. It might be a little slow every now and again, they told me, but hey...One tech actually asked me why I'd bother to to upgrade from a system I knew? I told him that I wasn't happy with the problems that had begun to surface shortly after getting the first bevy of patches for 98 SE. He said that wouldn't change. I had a long think about that but felt I was locked into a PC.

Then I got married to a Mac Head. My eyes were opened! I saw the light! And while I still have my PC - I use it to play music and play solitaire on, I do NOT use it to send mail or surf the net. I am very pleased with Tiger and love everything about it. For me, it's simply a more superior system. For me, I'd rather have some bells and whistles, and a system that doesn't break down rather than an OS I have little confidence in because it needs to be rebooted on a constant basis, regardless of all the bells and whistles it comes with. For me, having confidence in my OS/machine leaves me more time to write, the sole reason for getting a computer in the first place. Upgrade to Vista? Why the hell for? Steve Jobs/Apple have never done me wrong and I'm confident they never will.

I Agree

I think Vista seems to be too much hype. I don't remeber anyone getting so excited over XP. Linux sounds like a good switch right now because of all the dangers of Windows.

You are the (Mac) apple of my eye

by Larry Launstein Jr - 2/5/07 12:14 PM In reply to: Re: No Vista for me! by Trish Shields

I switched to a Mac Mini last summer. Huge difference. XP runs just fine on my Mac.

You see, it is more than just the operating system. The Mac is just a better computer.

No Vista for Me Should Everyone's Mantra!

by iainkayphd - 2/2/07 8:08 PM In reply to: No Vista for me! by irdac

In one sentence:

Microsoft Vista should have been at MOST Service Pack THREE for Windows XP (all versions).

Is the clear enough?

by phoenix380 - 2/3/07 7:28 AM In reply to: No Vista for me! by irdac

I was not looking for Vista but was curious if my machine was worthy ,no was the answere as to upgrade my video card which on the whole not bad even recommended a video card for me ---so kind basic card cost $35 to sooper dooper one of $100 which is handy to know huh ,but have heard stories of the 'Vista 'not picking up some hardware you may have because might not have got Microsoft Certificate ,so tough luck on Microsoft I won't buy it and I am running on Windows XP home edition which is fine for my needs and probably haven't used to it full capacity any way ?

No Family Pricing/Pack

by Tony D'Amico - 2/5/07 8:52 AM In reply to: No Vista for me! by irdac

If I upgrade my computer, I have to do my wife's and daughter's computer and a laptop. It is not worth it at these prices. Give us same deal a Apple, 5 pack for $199. It is a done deal.

Vista - why bother

by marpincan - 2/5/07 3:13 PM In reply to: No Family Pricing/Pack by Tony D'Amico

Like a lot of people say, it should have been nothing more than a service pack for XP.

And as one poster put it:"If I upgrade my computer, I have to do my wife's and daughter's computer and a laptop. It is not worth it at these prices. Give us same deal a Apple, 5 pack for $199. It is a done deal."

Ok - that did it for me, next time I take a serious look at a MAC.

no vista for me either

by rpen - 2/2/07 2:59 AM In reply to: In order for me to upgrade to Vista, I will have to... by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I don't want to spend extra dlrs for an OS! For what i do and considering i work as a s/w engineer, i can manage quite well with linux, thank you!

Besides, in spite of buying a core dueT2050 laptop, i will have to add more memory and the intel GMA 950 graphics card that came with it is only direct X 9 compliant.

And who wants an OS that will gobble cpu time to display elaborate graphics? Also, i am concerned about hidden restrictions on playing music files/videos/any other content in vista. I want to see how that stuff plays out.

No Vista for me - switching to Linux

by JLP - 2/2/07 3:16 AM In reply to: In order for me to upgrade to Vista, I will have to... by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I'm also very disappointed with Windows Vista. I see nothing new in it, nothing innovative, and to think that it was in development for 5 years and so much money was wasted on it. Well there is Aero user interface but it is not working very well, quite slow on my computer. The combination of XGL and Beryl in Linux works much faster and looks much better. Than we have this bad technology DRM which is integrated into Vista and this is a big negative point for me. It takes away control of my computer and puts it into the hands of greedy people like RIAA and MPAA. And they even dare to set such a high price for this restriction of users and much too high system requirements for what it offers. No thanks. I've seen through the hype of corporate propaganda and there will be no Wista for me. Windows XP is the last Windows that will se my hard drive. I'm just switching to Linux, it is free, it doesn't take away my freedom and it already is more stable, more secure and has more advanced features. I also recommend everyone who is deciding about the purchase to check out this web site: http://badvista.org/
