Hi Everyone!
I was wondering if anybody can tell me (for certain) if I can upgrade my copy of Windows 7 RC (v.7100) to Windows 7 Professional on my macbook pro partition via Bootcamp. I know apple doesn't "officially" support Win7 yet because they're still working on updating the drivers for bootcamp, but the Release Candidate version of Win7 works perfectly fine for me, except for the fact the multitouch trackpad is SUPER sensitive. The reason I'm asking is because since I am a student I qualify for the $30 student upgrade special from Microsoft. They sent me an email to my college email address. I briefly heard Tom and Rafe talk about it on "The Real Deal" in which they specifically mentioned "Windows 7 will be upgradable from XP and the RC version of Win7 but it'll be a clean install rather than a simple upgrade..." if anybody knows anything please let me know.

There is no way to do an *in-place* upgrade from Windows 7 RC (build 7100) or XP to Windows 7 Professional.
You can do a clean install, but that is going to wipe everything out and put Windows 7 in its place. It will put some files in a Windows.OLD folder from your old system - but don't count on it to back up your data.
You're going to have to reinstall programs, etc. - it is very similar to a format/completely clean install. Make sure you manually back up all of your data by hand or by using a program to assist you with it before you do any upgrading/clean installing.
Mods - if you can see this - I'm logged in as brandonsadkins and it posted as "Norwegian brat"... I've never had that username and have no idea where that came from.
Have our accounts been compromised or something. I don't know how being logged in as brandonsadkins would post as someone else!?!?!
Click Report Offensive post and report it. They have to fix this where and when found.
Thanks Norwegian brat or brandonsadkins....I'm not sure whcih, hehe. But I have an additional question. So having Windows 7 RC will enable me to buy just the upgrade version of WIndows 7 Pro rather than the full version? I read on some other blogs that a previously installed copy of XP or Vista was needed to do any kind of clean install or upgrade or whatever to have Windows 7 installed. I don't mind wiping everything from my computer since everything I do on my win7 RC partition is just documents which I always email to myself incase something goes wrong or my backup hard drive fails (happened more than once).
A similar question appeared a couple of months back. You actually do not need to do a clean install. All that is required is a quick INI tweak. I wrote up the instructions in the other thread at http://forums.cnet.com/5208-10152_102-0.html?messageID=3100081#3100081 .
Good luck!
Thanks anonymousjoseph, I'm gonna do it your way. Its easier than the other methods that I know of. You really are a geek (in a good way). You rock!
You can use an upgrade version if you're currently running XP or Vista. Does that answer your question?

would it work if I currently have a copy of windows 7 RC currently installed on my bootcamp partition? I heard it will work but I would still have to do a complete clean install, but if I ever reformat my system I would have to reinstall the RC then upgrade all over again to the win7 pro. the problem here is the RC will no longer be "activatable" (if that is even a word) after january 20th (i think).
I reread my post. I can't find Windows 7 RC on the list "XP or Vista", so I think it won't work. You'll have to do a clean install anyway, that's true.
But if it works, there's no need to activate in the scenario you mention. It should work with an unactivated copy then also.
Why not ask in our Windows 7 forum http://forums.cnet.com/windows-7-forum/ ?
