Stuck(dead?) pixel in LCD

by d.a.grice - 5/5/08 3:53 PM

Are stuck/dead pixels common with LCDs? I've a newly purchased HDTV(3 weeks old)and now have a dead(or stuck)pixel. It's not noticible when the set is off.In fact it's hardly noticible when the set is on(but because I have 'Monk' like hangups it's driving me crazy). I only see it whenever there is a light background on screen. Is it common to have a dead pixel so soon after buying a new LCD? I've contacted the manufacturer and they've agreed to pay to have the set shipped back to them and send a new set at their expense. Is it worth the trouble of returning this set and waiting a week for the new set to be sent out? If this is a common problem with LCDs should I just request a refund and stick with my old CRT?

One more question please

by d.a.grice - 5/5/08 5:20 PM In reply to: Stuck(dead?) pixel in LCD by d.a.grice

Does one dead pixel usually indicate that more are on the way or is this a hit or miss issue with the LCDs?
Thanks again.

hit or miss

by bevillan - 5/5/08 8:44 PM In reply to: One more question please by d.a.grice

It is pretty hit or miss, but the better LCD brands tend to have it happen less (like Sony, Samsung, Sharp).

I have designed Liquid Crystal Dislay sets before you probably even heard about them. I feel that you have been used as a consumer. My company which i cannot disclose here, fully believes and trusts our scientists and engineers with their namesake dependant upon lcd techology. Contact me via e-mail if you wish to hear of some "real" companies whom produce absolute quality hand tested sets from our group. It will not be extremely expensive, or obsurdly complicated. That I guarantee. We make television sets for the concerned consumer who demands perfomance higher than anything availible in Best buy, Circuit City, And local steroeo - video shops world wide. Trust me You will not be dissapointed. Period. I can reccomend a 46, 56, 72, 105 or larger set that is physically capapble of reproducing excacting video and audio quality far surpassing you normal "run of the mill" set so far that you will be sorry you bought any thing else.

Dead pixels...

by stuntman_mike - 5/6/08 2:20 PM In reply to: Stuck(dead?) pixel in LCD by d.a.grice

are a definite possibility with LCDs, but it is more of something to have in the back of your mind when shopping for one, rather than be worried about it. I have a Sony HD LCD monitor for my computer. I've had it for a few years and have not had one dead pixel.

If the pixel bothers you that much (I too have some OCD issues so I know it would bother me lol) I would definitely send it back. Forget about the nit picking part, it's the principle. The set is brand new. You should expect it to stay in new condition longer than a week or two.

I agree with Mike

by DennenTH - 5/6/08 3:47 PM In reply to: Dead pixels... by stuntman_mike

I agree with Mike on this one. A new TV is supposed to be new. If a dead pixel appears that shortly after purchase, then you definitely should have it changed out while you can. If you buy a new car and the thing starts falling apart on the way out of the lot, you don't just say "hopefully the rest of it stays together"... The same goes for things like buying a new disc *any type* and you open the sealed package and the disc is all scratched up. Or buying an Xbox 360 and it red rings on you on the first day *happened to my brother twice*.. All of these have warranties for a reason. Get the problem solved before it's too late, I say.

Thank you

Thank you Mike&Dennen :). I'm waiting for UPS as I type this. The hardest part now will be going back to my CRT for the next week while I wait for the replacement set. I avoided the HDTV/Digital set for so long. Now that I've had a taste of the picture quality going back to the CRT is almost like going back to a portable black and white set.
Thank you two again.

Dead Pixels

by timekill - 5/9/08 11:49 PM In reply to: Stuck(dead?) pixel in LCD by d.a.grice

I have been dealing with LCD's for years before anyone really knew what they are, i have the original SHARP Auquos 30 inch LCD, which there was also a 37 inch version, these two TVs were the first widescreen LCDs on the market back in 2002, SHARP has been producing LCDs for over 30 years, its their technoligy, the company has been producing LCD TVS since 1998, before ANY of the major companies.
Stuck pixels are not uncommon, and are not always permanent, higher end TVS are less prone as they are produced in better dust free factories.
if you get a stuck pixel there are few things to try first.
if the pixel is white or black it may be permanent, if its one of the primary 3 colors then the pixel is just stuck.
1. turn the TV off for 30 seconds then turn the TV back on.
2. lightly push the pixel (and ONLY the stuck pixel)with a pen tip,
massage the pixel by pushing the pen tip lightly and adding alittle more pressure each time (but NOT too hard)
do not touch any of the other pixels as you may make them stuck as well.
3. use a flash program, these can be found on the internet. they flash the 3 primary colors and a white fade to black, done at a fast rate, the idea is to shake the stuck pixel loose so it functions again.
its best to use a flash program that matches your TVs resolution, and run the program with your TV on for atleast 30 minutes.

if none of these methods work for you then the pixel is permanent.
companies will tell you 1 to 3 stuck or dead pixels is normal, and they usally won't replace the TV unless its more.
I find this to be a crock of bull, as even one should NOT be acceptable.

i hope this helps you and anyone else having problems with pixels.

That does help me....

by d.a.grice - 5/10/08 5:35 AM In reply to: Dead Pixels by timekill

out a lot. The pixel was white. From what you've said I take it that is was indeed dead a dead pixel.I turned the set off hoping the pixel would come back. I tried the massage technique, though I didn't use the tip of a pen. I was going to try the program you mentioned but I wasn't sure if it was meant to be used with tvs or computer screens only(told ya,I'm a newbie ;) ). The manufacturer was cooperative and offered return shipping and will ship a replacement out all on company's dime. I thank you for the information. I'll keep it in mind for future use. I hope I never have to use it lol :) .
