Ipod Touch 1st Generation vs Ipod Touch 2nd Generation

by sparker781 - 10/16/08 5:34 AM

Alright let the debate begin. Last year I purchased a Touch for $299 and am happy with it. Now I find out that they have a new Ipod Touch and am not sure if it's worth going out to buy that?

Thoughts anyone?

I have both

I'm very happy with my 2nd generation 16GB, but money is not as much an issue for me. The dedicated volume rocker is nice, but I'm already used to controlling the volume from the screen. The speaker is not very loud (the iPhone 3G is much louder, I'm told). You need to be in a very quiet room to hear it with the volume all the way up. Also some of the 3rd party docking accessories that worked with the 1st gen Touch may not work with 2nd generation, or may not work with full functionality. I have a clock radio and a car fm transmitter dock that work with the 2nd generation to play music from it, but neither will charge it. Both are fully functional with 1st generation, which was a pleasant surprise to me when I found out - they were already a couple years old when I got that Touch. I continue to use the 1st generation to play in my car. I decided to fully dedicate the old one to audio content and the new one to video content.

If you want the App store, $10 isn't a bad price to update your 1st generation. I skipped the January update, which was $20 and I'm glad I did. I have a friend who has the old one and was considering buying the new one. I showed him the new one and he thought while it was nice, was not different/improved enough to compel him to buy it. I steered him toward the Archos 5 instead.

That might not be enough for me to switch. If I want to play games I'll get myself a PSP or something.

Video protection, transfert to the iTouch

I have now found out that on the new upgrade for the iTouch they now prevent you to watch a video of your own in your iTouch, well they use the iTunes to do that, with the mention that there is not rented video to transfer to the iTouch and plus I found that since a couple of version upgrade for the iTunes, all my own video will not play correctly inside the iTunes outside of their podcast, I did not try any TV Show yet as not been impress by the poor quality of the video rendering of my own video and because of that I am not willing to give any dollars amount to rent video or season pass for a TV show as not been impress of how they treat the owner of their hardware, (You see, you buy the right to use it but they keep all the other right including the right to break the capacity of playing any kind of video file or audio file that they deem not fitting their rules. (I know about their small print) but hey a very evident one like this one should let you know about how they intend you to use it and not the other way around.

So be very aware of the iTouch that they are slowly making impossible to transfers any kind of medium that is not prior approved by Apple itself, I mean by that the Video file for a starter as they had to bend and let the MP3 play on their iPod instead of only the proprietary Apple audio codec .

I am very tempted by the Argos but have not seen anyone in action yet but reading about it make me almost drooling ;), just not sure how it is responsive and efficient compare to the iTouch (iPod), the thing that convinced me to buy it at first was the video capability but now I am discovering that Apple is trying to bloc me to see my own video file that they not distribute and that wasn't part of the deal as it is supposed to play any kind of MP4 that respect their specification at first.

So potential iTouch buyer, be aware of Apple control on your media library.

But my conversions specific to the Touch, using 3rd party software. I don't bother with buying/renting video from iTunes store either.

Which ipod touch to get

by ipodtouch2ggameser - 11/29/09 7:57 PM In reply to: Ipod Touch by sparker781

The improvements from 2g to 3g as i understand it are the graphics , OS , performance,Voice control support and most importantly you get twice the capacity , 32gb vs 16gb for the same price. If you have one already it really doesn't make sense getting a 3g but if it's you're first time buying it helps to know which ipod touch to get.
