I have tons of music so I need a good mp3 player. Zunes have been kicked out of PR (don't know why) so I'm looking at apple, The 32GB iPod Touch is "thank you but no thank you" the price tag is unbelievable and the iPod Classic is just so lame now that everyone has it and it's getting boring. On the other hand it looks like Apple is busy designing new stuff, so, should I wait to see if there's a new iPod behind the curtain, or should I buy the same old Classic (and then being tortured by a newer iPod on the shelves). What's your opinion? Thanks for reading!
However, I doubt that there is going to be a major iPod change. Possibly refreshes and price cuts. Apple usually does an iPod announcement in early-mid September. Expect an announcement of the announcement mid to late August.
I will! Thanks for the tip
I'm not a Mac or Apple TV enthusiast, so I can't begin to predict what will happen with those.
As far as iPods, I don't see anything exciting as far as the Classic is concerned. Maybe a $50 price reduction for 80 and 160 GB models. It's possible they could come up with a larger hard drive version or release more colors like the Nano (but I doubt it - they usually give the different color options to the Nano or shuffle).
For the Nano, probably retiring the old colors and coming out with new ones. Perhaps getting rid of the 4GB, keeping the 8GB (at $149 price tag would be nice) and coming out with a 16GB version.
I never really cared much for the newer shuffles. They're kind of cute but don't sound as good as the first generation white one. They could come up with new colors and/or more capacity. While I think they should get rid of it altogether, I don't think that will happen. The price point is a good entry for many to get into iPods that otherwise wouldn't or for those that are buying second/third/fourth iPods for fitness activities.
As for the Touch...that's a hard one. I don't think they're ready to come out with a 64GB version just yet. Usually other manufacturers such as Creative and SanDisk come out with their higher capacity flash players (last fall with 32GB) then Apple follows. It's unusual for Apple to keep 3 capacities of the same player available for very long. Currently the Touch is available in 8,16, and 32GB. In light of the price drops with the iPhone (but keep in mind that these are subsidized by the cell phone companies and you must have a contract), Apple may drop the 8GB, and lower the prices of the 16 and 32GB by $50-$100. Then once you see Creative and/or SanDisk announce a 64GB player in the fall, Apple could follow with a 64GB Touch in January, announced at 2009 MacWorld.
This was the best deal I could find. For the same price (or more) you could get a refurbished Nano.
There are reports that Apple will be going though a product transition that will negatively impact fourth quarter gross margins.

What this transition will be is anyone's guess.
If historical data is any guide an update on either the price or the feature set for the ipod is long overdue. I have an inkling that Apple is either going to cut the price or make a bump in storage. None of the rumor sites have any good rumors on huge feature updates, but not every update makes it to the rumor sites before release and even the ones that are right usually don't show up until a few days to a week or two before the release. The iPhone is the one big exception because phones require regulatory approval so they can't really keep it a big secret.
As to whether any worthwhile update is in the pipe is anyones guess. Apple is very secretive about product updates so you are usually wasting your time if you think anybody who isn't an Apple employee or has some role in the production of Apple products really knows what is coming.
