First good low budget DSLR?

by crazyperson312 - 7/26/08 9:41 PM

Hey everyone!

I would like some good expert views on my situation. I am a student and i would like to have a good cheap budget DSLR.

So it seems like there are 3 good low price entry DSLR and so far they are the Pentax K100D, Nikon D40(x), Canon 400D. I was wondering if those 3 were my only option or is there more too choose from that is around those price range?

Also out of those 3 witch one do you think it is the best?

I heard that the D40 can produce better image quality with its cheaper lenses were as if you had the Canon 400D and you want the same quality image you would have to pay an arm and a leg for the same good quality image that the Nikon Lense can deliever for alot cheaper.

Also I handled my cousins Nikon DSLR D70 and i really think i like the extra weight on the camera as i do not mind how heavy the camera is. Also is this a good deal? My cousin offer me his D70 (Pretty much in brand new condition no scratch what so ever), Nikon SB 800 Speedlight, CF II 512mb card, B+W filter lense, tri pod, carring case, strap, extra battery plus the manufactor battery etc. All for $1100 Canadian Dollars.

I personaly think it is worth it because i tried the camera out for 3 days continuously and it performs excellent and very easy.

What do you guys think about this situation?

Thanks in advance! Appreciate your time reading through my post!

Go with the free Nikon, you'll save yourself an abundance of money(especially with the flash added) and it's a great system to go with. On some information on what you were told, if you were comparing the 400D's lens to the Nikon's then I would say it was better, but the new Canon kit lens is much better than the previous kit lens.

Sorry

I ran past the cost that he's charging you. He would be doing nice to sell that used equipment for that price, unless the tripod and head of the tripod are of very high quality. The D70 is an older camera, and there are better out there. Here's what he's selling you.

high price for used D70= $400
SB800 new for= $320
That CF card is cheap and small, so you'd have to get another.

Tripods can vary greatly from very cheap to extremely expensive(along with an expensive head), but with the camera and flash only adding up to $720(with the flash being new) then he's making out extremely well with you buying it. How close of friend is he? I'm just kidding. Oh, Canadian currency is pretty much the same as US right now....I looked up to see the difference it would make.

Any new entry level DSLR will work very well for you, but you are buying into a system so you have to think long term in what you want out of lens and accessories. I would recommend the Nikons or Canons, but the others are fine, it's just that Nikon and Canon have the best line ups of lens.

Another option

See my post on my decision to buy the Nikon D60. Another low-cost option for DSLR.

Also look at

The Olympis E-510 and the Sony A200 or the Sony A300 if you need live view. The Nikon D60 would be a better choice than the D40, but the D80 is probably the way to go with Nikon.

Limited Lens selection.

Yeah I'v looked into both of them and it seems like they have a limited lens selection it seems like compare to Pentax, Nikon and Canon. Or i am wrong?

If you are a photography student or are going take photography seriously then you are right, but if this is just a casual thing then no, there are plenty of lens(Minolta, Sony, and Zeiss) that will be sufficient.

Probably

Im probably going to be a serious photograher or at most casual. I was thinking i would like to have a wide range of lens choice to pick from because that way i can take a picture of anything that comes in my way, all i got to do is just switch the lenses.

Sorry forgot to add this to top.

by crazyperson312 - 7/27/08 12:43 PM In reply to: Probably by crazyperson312

I was also thinking about the ease of the avaliability of the lense. Like at my futureshop they dont have any Sony lenses or anything else but just Nikon and Canon lense. The probably got 1 Sony lense maybe.

Low budget-lots of lenses= lots of money

by HTHMAN - 7/27/08 1:58 PM In reply to: Sorry forgot to add this to top. by crazyperson312

You need to look at the Canons, Nikons, Pentax and Sony(Minolta) used lens market if you want to shoot on a budget. One new lens can easily cost more than your camera(some of the used ones too).

True

That is very true!

I was just wondering does the Nikon D70 have anti dust? I tried searching it up on google but all i found was the D70s? Thanks for the help!

Post 13 of 46

nope

by kalel33 - 7/27/08 3:24 PM In reply to: True by crazyperson312

That camera is over 4 years old and won't have any of the new features. That's why I said that you would be getting ripped by your friend for that price.

Oh

Oh i see.

For some odd reason i really want to check out the Olympus e-510, what do you think about that Camera? Also where did you find the Sb800 for $320?! My futreshop is selling it for $399!!

Post 15 of 46

That's easy to find

by kalel33 - 7/27/08 3:50 PM In reply to: Oh by crazyperson312

The SB800 at Amazon(new)
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-SB-800-Speedlight-Digital-Cameras/dp/B00015GYU4

Dpreview on the E-510
"But overall, especially considering the excellent pricing, extensive feature set, effective image stabilization and superb design/construction/handling, the E-510 is an impressive and hugely rewarding camera in use. The results from the kit lens are some of the best we've ever seen, the SSWF dust reduction system is the most effective on the market and the whole package shows that Olympus understands the needs of the photographer as well as - if not better than - any of its major competitors. If it had a better sensor (less noise and better dynamic range) the E-510 would be a strong candidate for category winner; as it is you'll need to decide if the slight compromises the sensor demands are going to affect the type of pictures you take."
