Waterproof digital camera.

by Grahamv2.0 - 5/7/08 9:23 AM

I'm currently in the market to buy a new digital camera and am particularly interested in a waterproof one. I have recently gotten into some new water sports (surfing and kayaking) and will actually be working at a place where we take these kinds of trips and would love to have a waterproof camera. However, the waterproof cameras I have found online (mainly the olympis one) only have a slightly better than average rating. Image quality is more important to me than it being waterproof, because I also take lots of indoor shots, and love messing with my photos in photoshop. So my question is, am I going to have to give up my search for a decent waterproof camera, or is there a camera someone knows of?

You could buy the Canon SD1100 and buy a waterproof case, and only use it when you need it. This is the one for the Canon.

Don't go with the Optio...

I got a Pentax Optio W30 - also waterproff, and supposed to be nearly indestructible. However, I have found it hard to get a good shot with this camera - lots of out-of-focus shots and a lot of trouble in low light situations. Don't know about the Olympus, but I wish the Pentax worked better...

Try Canon

I bought a Canon PowerShot A620 a couple of years ago, and also bought the waterproof housing from Canon. Used it snorkeling in Hawaii, and it worked great. No problems with the camera (it didn't get wet), and the case allows you to use all of the controls.

Olympus Stylus Cameras

by kl-root - 5/9/08 7:47 PM In reply to: Waterproof digital camera. by Grahamv2.0

I have the older version Olympus Stylus 730 SW and have had good luck with the quality of the photos it has produced. The problem some people have with poor quality images is lack of knowledge of the cameras settings. This camera has a wide variety of settings for indoor and outdoor situations. Simply puting it on auto does not always do the job. As I said the Stylus 730 SW is the older version I do not know that much about the newer versions. I have found that some of the camera reviews on the net are a bit fussy about things that the average amature photographer would not notice or care about. The 730 SW does not produce what some might call professional quality images but it does produce an image of a quality that can be worked with to produce a professional appearing photo. My 730 SW does quite well with under water photos. I believe one of the newer models also has a higher waterproof depth rating. This camera has been dropped more than once and has hardly a nick in it. It realy is a very tough little camera. The 730 SW and it's newer versions are very compact and can be used with one hand very easily. My daughter is a professional photographer and uses this camera for those times when the activities do not allow for the fancier gear.
I hope this helps.

I would check out Dive Magazine's advice at http://www.divemagazine.co.uk
They have a strong track record on very good Underwater photography, and a strong photographic section with equipment advice and reviews.

Olympus SW Series

by gfine - 5/9/08 8:47 PM In reply to: Waterproof digital camera. by Grahamv2.0

But it depends on what you want it for. If it is professional pictures, then the suggestions above to buy a good camera and get it a diving case is the way to go.

I have an Olympus 720SW, and I think the camera is great. Out of the box the newer (780SW, I think) models are rated for 10 meters (33 feet), and don't need a specal case. We took ours on a cruise, and people were shocked when I jumped in the pool with it on my wrist. The previous poster is correct that it could be a little more user friendly, but once you've mastered the settings for the camera, it takes rather good pictures for the price.
