PC/Mac switch to use one mouse/keyboard

by jl777 - 3/17/09 9:27 AM

I have a PC and a Mac at work. With that I also have a mouse and a keyboard for each. Is there a way that I can just use one mouse and keyboard for both of these computers?

"Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display,"

Google Synergy and you may have to wait for the server to come back online.

PC/Mac & Same Mouse, Keyboard, Etc...

Well, of course you can. Look for what's called a "KVM" switch at your local computer retailer/dealer.

This switch lets you have both machines even running at the same time and with the 'push' of a button', you switch your Keyboard, Mouse and Video from one machine to the other. You can set it, to only switch what you need switched as well.

A H.Q. switch (Belkin) might cost about $90 with all the cables you will need to do the job.

Synergy is your answer

Install Synergy on your PC - get it here: http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/

And then get SynergyKM for Mac here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=176447&package_id=202975

The two are actually the same program, just that SynergyKM has a nice GUI wrapper for Mac OS X. Follow the lifehacker tutorial here and you're all set: http://lifehacker.com/software/dual-monitor/hack-attack-control-multiple-computers-with-a-single-keyboard-and-mouse-254648.php

Starview KVM switch

I have used a Starview KVM switch for 6 years with no problem. Whatever switch you get, ensure its powered independently and not just from USB bus.
