I know this is an old problem and I have been looking at various threads but am still not sure what if anything can be done. I currently have a generic computer with Intel Pentium 4A, 2400MHz, and 1024 MB (DDR SDRAM) OS is XP/sp3. It has 3 internal hard drives and also 4 external hard drives attached via USB
A few months ago I goofed and bought a SATA WD hard Drive which won’t work in any of my computers since they are older and have ATA (or IEDE) connections. I thought about trying to sell it on EBay since it was never used but then decided to purchase an external USB enclosure that would house a SATA drive. When I plugged this in I received a message (lower right hand corner) that new hardware had been detected and was ready to be used. But when I went to “My Computer” all of my other drives were listed but not this one. This one does show up in device manager as (WDC WD16 00ys-01SHB1 USB Device and says that it is working properly. So then, I went to Western Digital’s website and downloaded drivers for this hard drive which came zipped in a “package with drivers for 4 different drives. I unzipped for my SATA hard drive and it showed WD1600YS as an application. double clicked on this and I ended up in DOS (black screen with white letters" as follows:
WDDST057 Version 1.08
Update Drive
Copyright <C> 2003-2007 Western Digital Corporation
Below this is a blinking horizontal bar (cursor?)
Nothing happens no matter what keys are pressed except when I click on the cancel X, then I get the following: “Windows cannot end this program. It may need more time to compete an operation, etc.” I don’t know if this is a driver problem or something else. I tried this on another computer with the same results. I also have a software program called Driver Detective that tells me that my computer has the necessary drivers for this hard drive. Or is this problem related to the fact that this is a SATA drive; I wouldn’t thinks so since it is going through a USB connection. Can’t check this hard drive out on any of my computers since none of them are set up for SATA.
You need to go to the Control Panel under Administrative Tools/Computer management and then Disk Management. The drive should show as unpartitioned space. Right click on the drive and select the option to partition the drive and and you're on your way. Once the drive is partitioned, it will have a drive letter and explorer will see it. You'll also have to format the drive (can be done during the partitioning) for it to be able to hold any data. Hope that helps.
Sure took care of the problem. Forgot all about computer management and disk management. Haven't gone there in a number of years. Thanks again for the advice.
