Is A+ now limited, and requiring renewal?

by ACRScout - 5/29/09 10:08 PM

When I took my first A+ Exam, I was told that once it was passed you were certified for life and upgrading of skills was left to the individual. I have occasionally retaken the exam just to keep my mind active and up to date, but until recently I had never been required by an employer to retake the exam. Last Sept, I was down sized out of my job and started looking for a new one. I found an opening with a major government contractor, but they said that my certification was expired because there is a requirement to renew every five years. Is this a rule that CompTIA has instituted or is it likely that the government contractor merely wants me to retest to prove I still know what I'm doing?

if you took your A+ exam in 2000

it would not indicate you know anything about 64bit desktop OSs, quad core CPU, ddr3 ram, sata drives, ipv6, active directory, or any other "new" tech that has come along in the past 9 years.

I understand..

I do know that skills need updating, and I was not questioning that fact. I was asking is anyone knew of a "requirement" by any of the certifying agencies, to take any sort of exam to update certification. Places I have worked in the past have never required re-certification, but when new technologies come in we had to train and learn the new technologies. But there was no requirement to re-certify.

the fed gov and companies require periodic recertification

by ramarc - 6/1/09 2:57 PM In reply to: I understand.. by ACRScout

you can google to find the recertification rules for any gov agency you're applying/working for. some companies are lax about recertification, but most large corporations require it every five years or so if you want to climb the ladder. once you get to vendor specific certifications (such as from ibm, oracle, cisco, or microsoft), the certification treadmill really begins since each major product release has its own certification. (a win2k cert doesn't mean diddly today.)

Their rules.

Da rules are da rules.

While one can debate this the bottom line is the employer sets the rules so while it may seem unfair if they want such and such then give it to them.

Re-certification not the issue.

by ACRScout - 6/1/09 6:07 AM In reply to: Their rules. by R. Proffitt Moderator

I have no problem with re-certifying. I have already retaken several exams to update. My question is simply this...

Has CompTIA or any other certification agency created a requirement to re-certify?

What the employer wants is mainly irrelevant to me, since if I like their rules I will work there, if I don't I will continue my search.

I don't NEED a job, and if I run into an employer who has rules on certification that insult my intelligence, I have to wonder what other points of idoicy they may come up with just to irritate the 'hired help' when it comes time for budget cutting down the road. I don't beleive in the "give it to them" attitutde. A job interview is a negotitation, not a dictation session. If I allowed the employer to run the interview as you suggest, I would be doing network administration for $7.00 and hour.

I see you could ask them at this link.

CompTIA FAQ states

by wilsonbd - 6/5/09 7:19 PM In reply to: Is A+ now limited, and requiring renewal? by ACRScout

Q: Should I take a new version of an exam if I am already certified?

This is your choice. Some employers require that their technicians be certified under the most recent exam version.

Q: Does CompTIA still considered me certified if I passed the previous version of an exam?

Yes.
