Should I get a video card w/fan or heatsink?
by shawndh - 12/10/08 9:06 AMI'm looking to upgrade my onboard Radeon X1200 video card with a Radeon 3450 card w/256Mb of Ram. I Know it's a lower end card but it seems to suit my needs. There are so many variations of the card to choose from - I just want to know if a fan or heatsink version would be best.
The component side will be right next to my PCI express 1X tuner card but nothing else on the other side. (it's Kind of tight) The system is a new Acer M1100-U1402A so I guess the cooling is pretty good. Would appreciate your advice.

One card had a small heatsink and a fan.
The other card had a large heatsink and no fan.
Both cards had the same perf.
It occurred to me.
Why do I need another fan that will make noise?
Why do I need another fan That I will have to clean?
I went with the fanless unit.
It's seen years of use....no fuss.
Your mileage may vary.

The other half is that whatever heat they generated "MUST BE EXHAUSTED" out the case. Thus, your case needs a good setup in order to maintain proper heat range within limits and lower. That's it, no fancy anything, just keep the *whole* system within tolerances.

Heat is the enemy of electronics, less heat means a better running system.
Buy the one with the fan.
