USB ports

by leistra - 10/14/08 1:45 PM

I need to be sure my computer has a powered USB port to run a MAXTOR external drive for backup. As far as I can tell my PC has 3 Intel R DBM USB Universal Host Controller-24C with various numbers and one USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller. How can I tell if any of these are powered by my PC?
Thanks.

Power is standard on desktops. On laptops they will be powered only when plugged in to the power supply.

Usually.

Since you didn't tell us if you are talking about a desktop or laptop . . .

USB ports don't need to be powered by a PC. They will provide their own power as long as the PC is on. But they must be enabled by the system BIOs in order to work. You should check your BIOs to see if all of your USB ports are enabled. If they are, then you should be able to run your external drive with one of them.
