Hi All-
My new 42' LCD TV only has HDMI connections and my laptop only has a VGA connection. My initial thoughts were I could use my TV as a monitor but my connections don't match up. I use vga to vga for my plasma but there is no vga input on my LCD. I heard I cannot use a VGA to HDMI converter because it won't work.....How am I going to get my tv turned into a monitor....I could buy a desktop w/ HDMI connections but that will be pricey....Any help is appreciated.

A vga to dvi adapter plus dvi to hdmi adapter (together would give you a vga to hdmi) and I'll leave the details to you. It probably cost about $25.
The other suggestion might be a 20" monitor for about $150-200.
Thanks but I've been told this wont work either. just by word of mouth though. not sure if i want to buy adaptors that may not work. ANYONE? Help. I think I could install a new graphics card but what a pain.
but remember..there isn't too much room in those laptop.
ALL the inputs on the TV and ALL the outputs on the laptop.
But be aware, the resolution of the laptop video card will NOT match any resolution on the LCD. It'll work, but it won't be stellar.
One of the main reasons I bought my LCD was to turn it into a monitor. I'm surprised there isn't a way to do this. Help please? Anyone?
When you purchased the TV did you tell them that you wanted to use it as a monitor on your laptop?
If so you should return it to the supplier and ask them to supply one that has a VGA input.
Look for S-video interface too. One fo the pal mentioned the matching of resolution is critical. (Yes, it is)
If u have, try that too. There are a lot of checks when we need to hook the external LCD TV as laptop monitor. But wont be that difficult as it either work or dont. Lol.
Startech does sell a VGA to HDMI convertor, but it is $200+.

This isn't the only one on the market, but it is one of the cheaper ones. Contrary to what the other guy said a simple VGA-DVI and DVI-HDMI won't work because the pin adapters don't change the video signal from an analog to a digital signal.
If the TV has component you could buy a VGA to component box. Those go for about $70-100. Component isn't as good as hdmi and most of the boxes don't include audio so you would have to buy a 3.5mm to RCA audio connector as well.
Depending upon the box the quality may or may not be what you are looking for. Furthermore, the resolution maybe lower than your laptop. Quite a few 42" LCDs are 720p, which would mean that you wouldn't be able to fit anymore information on the 42" than on your laptop screen. If this is a 1080p panel and your laptop supports that resolution to an external display(if this is an older laptop this is unlikely) I think it is a great idea.
On the other hand this is a 720p panel I am not so sure this. With a 720p panel if you are trying to do this because your vision is terrible than this makes sense. If you are trying to work with more information(better resolution) I would just buy a 22" monitor for the ~$200 instead of a VGA-HDMI converter box.
Unless you are playing high-end video games, I'd just recommend an external USB video adapter - an OK one is under $100. Buy one with DVI (Digital) and add the DVI->HDMI adapter.
Just Google "usb external video card" should yield a plethora of hits.
Like others have said, you would have to convert the analog (VGA) video to digital for HDMI to use the existing port on your laptop. Then you're hitting the analog-digital issues where the signal just will not look that good.
