Portable scanner recommendations

by Mindstyle06 - 11/6/09 5:52 AM

Hello All,

I had Epson Perfection 2450 Photo flatbed scanner and I must say that I was more than happy with its performance for document and photo scanning. Now, I am back in the market in search of portable scanner to scan mainly documents (like contract papers, receipts etc)

The requirements -
1. Portability
2. Colour scanning.
3. Both side scanning would be preferred but NOT necessary
4. Most important is scanning quality, it should be at least at par with my flatbed scanner (taking into account that my old flatbed was 2002 product and now 2009)
5. OCR program not essential as I have Acrobat.
6. Budget less than USD200.

Searching web and cnet forums led me to few examples but I am yet to find any colour one, except XEROX XTRAVEL-SCAN and Fujitsu Scansnap S300 bundles.

Is there any other quality colour portable scanner that I missed and fits into my requirements? I will be glad to know.

Many thanks in advance.

(P.S. - Please reply only if you have used your recommended scanner in person)

At under 200 to meet all those specs and be PORTABLE too! Who makes this?

Currently available for USD 179 on newegg.

The P.S. was put in place because even googling will give me the results but I would trust somebody who has used it and seen the results first hand, rather than plain reviews (and may be I could request that commenter to send me a sample for my evaluation)

Well that dismisses those.

Your Epson has "2400 x 4800 dpi resolution and true 48-bit color,"

The xerox and fujitsu is all of 600 dpi. So those wouldn't come close to your Epson.

My need is only 300dpi

and reference to Epson scanner was for quality of the scanned document, which of course depends on the resolution. At the same time, I don't want to have a scanned copy that looks as if scanned using photocopier. Hence I referred Epson, may be I wasn't clear enough in this regard.

I must say, I am a consumer not an expert in hardware so if the owners of certain equipment recommend me something, I would certainly look into it and thats exactly what I am looking for here.

You do the pricing.

If I were to try one of those 2 it would be the Fujitsu.

-> ONE THING. If it does not work with Windows 7 64 bit, pass it up and keep shopping. Take it as a sign.

Older model never disappointed. Street price way lower than MSRP.
