Need help to make a printer wireless...

by mawil1013 - 11/10/09 10:24 AM

01. I have a Linksys dual band router, configured and located in one room,

02. The desktop that I configured the router with is in another room with a Linksys wireless-N PCI adapter with dual band.

I have a Kodak non-wireless printer in the same room as the router,

Question, Can I take a laptop running vista (non-wireless) and stick a Wireless USB in, plus plug the printer into the laptop and then be able to use the printer from the desktop located in a different room?

And if so, how do I locate the printer from the desktop??

Regards, Mike

Hi Mike,

I print from my laptop(Windows Vista Home Premium, wireless) to my desktop(Windows XP Home SP2, wired) through my wireless router. How? You must install the drivers for the model of printer you have on all your computers. In addition, you must set up all your computers to share and access the same Workgroup. If you had Windows XP Professional or Vista Ultimate this process would be much easier. Another tidbit, I setup the same login profiles on both of my computers. This would be like accessing computers at work, in which you can login in on any computer you are aloud to access anywhere in the workplace on the network.

Here is a link for setting up your home network and printers.

In addition, you can choose the link below and it will direct you to multiple links where you can get info on setting up a home network.

Before you start, if you have any Windows XP computers on your network, you must go to Microsoft's website and download the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder (KB922120). You need this package in order for the Vista computers to see the Window XP computers on the network.

Here is the link for the Link Layer Responder: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=4F01A31D-EE46-481E-BA11-37F485FA34EA&displaylang=en

I hope this information helps. Last, make sure you read your Firewall vendor's instructions about sharing on the network. It is important because chances are your firewall will block your printing efforts.

I wish you great success,

Mike G.
