1GB portableapps.comFlash stickFULL. FormatBiggerStickORjust...
...SIMPLY cut & paste over??? Or do I install all my portable programs all over again from scratch? (I'm thinking copy & paste is QUICKER than from scratch???) Either way, do I need to format and/or initialize the bigger Flash stick??? (terminology?)
And the bigger Flash drives are 2GB and 4GB (and I'm thinking of using the 4GB stick...which I'm hoping will hold me over longer than the 2GB stick)
Hope this is the right part of the forum for my question
Thanks,
When your car trunk is full do you go get a new car? Or do you remove a few things?
PlzDon'tSwitchSubject! ANDcan'tCompareApplesOranges. Besides...
...I've ALREADY got the 2 and 4GB sticks (not like I still have yet to go out and purchase the sticks--see what I mean?)
AND let be clear on one thing here: I do want to purchase a new car! NONE of this removin junks fro da trunks kinda thingy here--got that??!!! (Well...then? GOOD!!!! J/k--gotcha huh??!!) What I'm sayin figaroly is: since I ALready got bigGER sticks, I WANNA, somehow, get what I already got on the 1GB stick--and in this case, the only time where plumping up da junk in da trunk is acceptable aesthetically (plz, gurl! if chu don't drop those #s, we're thru!!!!!!)--what I already GOT on 1GB stick...BUT I WANT TO ADD *EVEN* MORE portableapps.com to it!!!!!!!! (Got that? GOOD, I knew dat u wud!)
U see, I got OOo on 1GB, but can't cram/jam PORTABLE GIMP on there!!!!!! I thought u knew the purpose of life is to accumu and accumu til u ABSOLUTELY caN'T accumu any mo??!! I haven't reach MY absolute point yet (capisce?) Beside OOo, also got PORTABLE Chrome, Fx, FDM.org (want me to go on? Suffice to say, basically my 911 stick+few producTI-VI-TIES so I can be productive!!! Suffice (or should had been to u--but u had to secondguessed instead) also--I AIN'T throwing out any apps--they are all necessary to me. Ahh, job stability, Sr. R. Proffitt!!! If every1 on this Earth knewitalls so they knew "daanswers" already, u had be part of the 10% unemployed sir!!! So be grateful--LIKE I'M GRATEFUL THAT *YOU* ARE HELPING ME OUT!!!
Moral: plz don't second guess (???!!!!!!)
Summary: no cleaning junk in da trunk scenario + ALREADY have 2 & 4GB sticks (thinking 4GB in my mind)...Give these scenarios, how do I go bout, shortest time YET STILL give me functional end product??? (Do u also see 4GB for me???)..........................AND I'M VEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERY GRATEFUL TO UR HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For each app, the space required will differ. And if you say you want to slim down GIMP PORTABLE you dive in and experiment since add the addons add up.
Or you tripped over a more common issue. KEEP READING.
There is a limit on the number of files we place in the root or top directory. Since Portable Gimp is all of 67 meagerbytes installed (see http://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/gimp_portable ) my bet is you didn't run out of space but installed it to the top directory.
Bob
still secondguessing!! PLEASE, I IMPLORElet'sJUSTconcentrate...
...ON BEING PRODUCTIVE AND MAKING HEADWAYS, OK???
FOR STARTER, I didn't know there's a limit to the top directory (and you said this is a COMMON tripping point also??!!!!!!!!! C-O-M-M-O-N!!!!!!!!) What? This limiting conundrum is particular to USB flash devices and not other storage devices? And what would be that limit? And if I didn't want to install GIMP to the TOP/ROOT directory--WHERE ELSE WOULD I WANT TO INSTALL IT??(BUT MO IMPORTANTLY "WHY" AS IN GOOD REASONS I WOULD WANT TO INSTALL IT ELSEWHERE?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
AND I didn't say anything bout slimming down GIMP!!! INSTEAD, I said *CRAM/JAM* !!! Besides, I thought software author fixed app's size!!! 67MB is.........LESS than 67MB *YOU* ARE saying??????????????????????
STILL SECONDGUESSING!! when u r using words like "OR this" "OR that" "my bet is"
If we were all knoitalls and self-experimenters/trubleshooters/self-answerers, we wouldn't be in the http://forums.cnet.com *AT ALL* RIGHT??? DO U AGREE??? THEN I THINK THAT LEAVES YOU IN THE SOUPLINE!!!! (AND PRAY U DON'T RUN INTO THE SOUP NAZI!!! HAHAHA. SO DO *YOU* WANT TO BE IN A LINE??? A-N-Y LINE?????)
"For each app, the space required will differ" "since add the addons add up". NSS (tip: last S=Sherlock or in the words of Homer: $h!t NO!!!!)......so can we move away from the STATING THE OBVIOUS, the secondguessing, and/or all the other inclusive things (ASSUMPTIONS, JUMPING TO CONCLUSIONS, ETC) that make us *seem* elitist tho that might not had been the intention *AT ALL*--AND JUST CONCENTRATE ON DIRECT/STRAIGHTFORWARD HELP WITH DIRECT ANSWERS--AND *THIS* REQUIRES A CERTAIN DEGREE OF HUMILITY, DO U AGREE???????????????????????????????????
So, back to the topic at hand: when I RIGHT-click 1GB flash stick, and got "PROPERTIES", IT'S ALL BLUE, BABY!!!!!!!!!!!! BIG ZERO SPACE LEFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND I ONLY STARTED TO RATTLE OFF *SOME* OF THE APPS *AND ASKED U IF U WANTED ME TO CONTINUE* ...so let me go ahead and lay out ALL the programs: 7-Zip, ClamWin, KeePass, Pidgin, DriveImage XML, RocketDock, SumatraPDF, VLC, PNotes, Sunbird.............................and the yet to be crammed/jammed GIMP............................................AND MAYBE EVEN MORE: LIKE I SAID, MY 911/RESCUE STICK, eg: TrueCrypt, etc???
So PLEASE, I IMPLORE U, JUST KEEP THINGS TO DIRECT BACK-AND-FORTH Q&As, but if there's needs for clarifs,THEN clarifs by all means!!! BUT NO TIME WASTING BACK AND FORTHS DON'T U AGREE??? U HAVE OTHER THINGS U NEED TO BE PRODUCT ON--AS DO I (OH GOD DOES HE KNOWS!!!!) !!!!!!!!!!
AND I'M VEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERY GRATEFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SUMMARY: "PROPERTIES" = ALL BLUE, NOOOOOOOO PINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So how do I go about starting to even making progress/a dent in my problem at hand??? THANK YOU VERY MUCH
Could you keep it condensed? To weed out the real question is too much work.
The top root directory issue is indeed common knowledge. You can scream that it isn't but then you could go research that since why should I duplicate the web here?
-> You did ask where to put it if not in the top directory. The answer is simple. A folder or sub-directory.
About SECONDGUESSING. Since you never share the gritty details I am left to SECONDGUESSING. Is that not allowed?
Good luck,
Bob
YES, SADLY! cnetISoneOFdaGREATSwebsiteBUTforumHELPentrenched...
...by technical people--at least one--that thinks he's all-knowing divine sureme even more supreme than some supreme being
if i never give u the nitty gritties...but i never recall any point where u asked for clarifications...other than belittling me and i'm sure 99.999% of the people that u also belittled
Like I said, CNET is one of the great sites, but other than that, I don't know what to say (well I do, but I'm gonna bite my tongue cuz i'm gonna keep it prof and matured)
If u start to see the world a little bit diff and decide to be helpful like that HondaHelpfulGuy, then bring it on--I ain't mad at cha
You bring up a good point. I'm encountering more folk that don't want to learn about their machines. They feel slighted as we discuss simple things like file systems and how these work.
Here it is all volunteer so what I'm asking you to do is to go out and research on your own since if I duplicated the full answer to "why can I only put so many items in the top directory" then very few people could find answers as all those that will answer are bogged down.
Here's the deal. I'll supply the shortest possible helpful answer.
Bob
