I'm new to forums and computers. I've had previous problems with losing data personal stuff etc, so we thought we would buy Portable Hard Disk, copy everything onto that, only switch it on when needed, no problem(sorted). If only. We went to use a program on it and the thing had melted on both sides,(plenty of ventilation)had stopped working. Is there any way I can retrieve important information. I have contacted the company I bought the drive from, but waiting to find info. Please can someone give me some hope!!!!!
Have this cable I use. I remove the drive from the housing (or case) and connect it to this cable and copy the files out. What cable? This one -> http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=2020&cat=HDD
I have no power in HDD, don't know how to open drive, don't know if the circuit board is fried. Looked at link, not sure how it would work.
That is, you take it to the shop counter. The cable I shared lets me attached almost all the common hard disks to most computers. Since it's not evident to you that it supplies power and the interface I'll just let it stand in this sentence that it does that just fine.
Here's the choice. You dive in and learn or you drive in and have it done.

the only source for your data is an external HDD ?

i have an internal drive for data, but I put all my back up, music, video's, pictures cv etc on External HDD, because of previous problems, when i lost ALL info on another computer drive.
get another HDD and return the dead one under warranty (if applicable).
Believe you'll find matching logic boards with specific firmware are more expensive than a new HDD with a 3 or 5 year warranty.

The other posters offered what can be done. However, the ext. HD maker will only provide a "replacement ext. HD" and usually not get the data back to you. Further, if you open the ext. HD case to get the HD out, you'll probably void the warranty and be refused even a replacement. If the data is that important, then open the ext. case as best you can and not further damage the int. HD present. Hopefully, it can be mounted as an int. HD to your present as 2nd HD and fetch the data that way. -OR- use the adapter Robert mentioned and once attached, fetch data. Yes, that adapter does provide cables for data and power. If all this is too much, find a local tech shop to attempt this. My suggestions and those of others pretty much covered the repair options available.
