Yes I can create partitions. But there is no added or reduced risks to file lose. We reduce our chances of file loss by "backup."

If you have any questions, take a moment to read through some of the posts here in the storage forum.

yes you can partition the drive.
the next two questions are similar. you have the same chance
of the HD dieing as you would if it was inside the case.
you also have an increase chance of killing the drive being
external when you ... oooopsy... drop it, spill coffee on it, etc.
I have two drives on board, the second one has a partition that
I use for backups. I also have an external drive that is partitioned
for each of my pc's. and I copy the backups to the pertinent
patition. its a just in case thing.
the external I keep in a padded box in the closet to try and aleviate the oopsy's.
go for it. good luck.

Can you create partitions in external drive

by georgew282 - 5/10/08 5:29 AM In reply to: Can you create partitions in external drive by kingsangle

Yes you can. I use "Acronis" Disk Disk Director Suite 10.
The software is straightforward and easy to understand.I bought it bundled with "Acronis" True Image 11 Home.It was on special offer through PC Magazine for $50.You may not get that price now,but its still well worth a look.
The rest of the question seems to have been answered by the other contributors.
Best of luck.

Create Drive Partition

by emath49 - 5/12/08 11:35 AM In reply to: Can you create partitions in external drive by kingsangle

I have created partitions on an external drive. I used Partition Magic. Although it did create the partions correctly, my data was destroyed. The software stated that my data would not be destroyed. New hard drives usually come with their own software. I used their software for creating partitions, though all data is erased.

Yup.

That's happened to me as well. My advice is always "we only backup what we can't lose." PM has a good record of being able to do this without loss but once in awhile it fails.

Can I ask why you were doing this? There is no safety gained by more partitions, why do this?
