I have an alienware area 51 thats about 3-4 years old and I need a new hard drive. I know I want a 9600 rpm hard drive and I know it will be expensive, does anybody know what kind of hard drive I need and where I can get it? thanks.
This is a "top end" gaming PC. You know it would be best to get a 10000 rpm HD and that it will be expensive. You might run those programs of most concern off a fast one and those programs with lower priority on another slower drive, maybe the one you have already. This will save you $$$$. The lower the latency the faster it will be. The larger the cache the better. Adding hardware can increase operating temperatures so add cooling if needed after adding the drive. This also applies to power, adding hardware might increase your power needs. Is it time to upgrade that power supply?
Examples (not much to choose from):

The HDs shown are examples only. They are not shown as endorsements/recommendations of any kind.

Oops, didn't notice that first time around. Better get a cool one if it's a laptop; one that will conserve battery life.
Read the specs for the kind of drive you want/need.
Even reading the specs you can get in trouble. I ordered one for an older Thinkpad but learned that while the drive was right the pin connections varied and I got the wrong ones. It all worked out in the end but I got lucky and had a use for the 'wrong drive'.
If i remenber correctly the area 51 is a dell computer,i believe they used seagate harddrives. You can find out thru alienware and see what they suggest,or pop the harddrive cover and see what make is. After finding make see which newer ones and faster one are compatiable.(the mounts and connecting pins)Alienware has Tech staff to help you ,go to their web site for more assistance, hope this helps OK
