adding Bluetooth after purchase?

by franklenraymond - 3/6/08 5:47 AM

I have been looking at purchasing my first ever laptop, and the problem is no one unit seems to have the mix of all the features I want in the near $1000 range. I found one that has just about everything, except Bluetooth, which I really want for syncing my cell phone, but probably don't really need and could survive without. But my question is, if I buy a laptop without Bluetooth, what are the possibilities of taking it to a shop and having it added internally after the fact of purchase, as opposed to just carting around a USB Blutooth adapter everywhere with me?

If it isn't built in, you're stuck with an USB-adapter (or a PC-card adapter if the laptop offers such). It's a rather small nuisance, I'd say.

I didn't want a big USB item so I lucked out and found a tiny one. Here's the one I have now -> http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=BTA-3210-EDR&cat=NET

It's about as small as it gets today AND it works without installing drivers on my XP and Vista laptops. I love native support!

oh yeah, that mini USB Bluetooth adapter looks like it would be just the ticket. Just plug it in and leave it, only sticks out a portion of an inch. Thanks Bob!

It's easy....

I brought a Dell laptop that did not come with bluetooth because at the time I did not have a blue tooth compatible cell phone. When I did get one it was easy to install blue tooth.... I purchased a blue tooth module for about $50.00 from Dells wed site. There was a compartment on the bottom of my laptop. I opened that compartment, inerted the moduel and connected he cable to it. Closed the compartment and ran the installation software. The whole process took maybe 5 minutes. Differculty level about equal to changing a light bulb. Your milage may vary depending on what type of laptop you are looking at buying.
