I've used MTR for years on my previous laptop, an ibook running 10.4.11. I used the free MTR 2.6 and everything went well most of the time. I mainly used it for copying our DVD's to take on tour with me, so my husband could have the originals at home. I would use MTR to rip the DVD and Toast Titanium 8 (purchased program) to burn the discs. When I bought a new computer running 10.5.7 (whatever animal that is--can't keep track of the cute names) and copied the programs onto it, MTR doesn't seem to work well and Toast not at all. Gotta find the Toast discs and reinstall--that's a no-brainer. But MTR seems to have gotten pretty weird--I sent an email to the developer and got that whole strange "gift, library" etc. spiel. For the moment I'm just using the old laptop for this, but it's on its last legs (unfortunate collision with a glass of wine) and may not be working much longer.
OK, finally to my question. I know Handbrake works great for ripping DVD's, but I can't figure out how to burn a disc from it--it doesn't produce the video TS file I need to burn with Toast.
Any suggestions? And thanks!

Handbrake will make and save a video file (the choices appear along the right-hand column) that you simply drag into Toast for DVD burning. Not sure, but Toast may need to re-encode the video file. In Toast, the best option is to save as a desktop Image File, then this file can be used to burn DVDs.
is available for backing up your commercial DVD's
The process is a little convoluted but basically you have to donate a monetary gift to the developers to further the Research & Development of the project.
Once you PayPal the gift, you will receive a link to an installer and a license for your machine.
Full instructions are available on the MTR forums.
I don't think Handbrake will remove the encryption that is on a commercial movie.

... that included a DVD ripper called RipIt 1.2.10. It advertises that it will... "Copy DVDs to your hard drive with one-click and create region-free, encryption-free backups. ". The price is about $20.00 when buying it from the developer.
Unfortunately, I am still running Tiger (10.4) and RipIt runs on Leopard osx 10.5 so I have yet to use it.
I've been waiting to buy a new mac for quite a while, anticipating Snow Leopard's release. Now that you get an OS upgrade on new machines for only $29.00 , I anticipate getting a new computer before the September release date for osx 10.6.

Has anyone else got experience with this app yet ?

hi grim--
thanks for the note. i have to say, i'm not blown away by OS 10.5 yet, but i haven't used time machine and some of the other frills. there are earlier versions of ripit out there--maybe one would work with 10.4?
As for the imac itself, my first one lasted 13 days and then died. fortunately it was within the replacement period, so i schlepped it back down to the apple store (manhattan madness and a large box on a bus) and traded it in. hope this one lasts a little longer. this is my 5th mac in 15 years, and the first lemon i've encountered. it's a damn fast machine.

the Snow Leopard update is $29.00 for everyone who has Leopard.
Buy a new machine from the Apple On-Line Store after June 8th 2009, and you can participate in the "Up to Date" program where you can get a copy of Snow Leopard for $9.95
Full details can be found Here
It does not mention the purchase of a machine from places like MacMall.

The good news--Ripit works very well. The bad news--I used up my week's trial, paid for the program and now haven't heard back from them, so I can't use the darned thing! Don't they know about instant gratification? Thought Australia was supposed to be up on that!
