Trojan Java/ByteVerify
Daughter has a XP Home Edition Computer and the Virus a scanning has presented her with a Torgan "Java/ByteVerify"
To remove the Trogan she has been given instructions to remove the "Microsoft Java" and update to "Sun Java".
She was given the http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 to assist!
This URL gives details how to remove/uninstall the "Microsoft Java" and how to update with the "Sun Java" from http://java.com/en/
I am using Windows Me and should I be doing the same with my computer?
Not sure if if this is correct or should one do so???
Advice would be appreciated.

go to control panel, click java coffee cup
click cache, then click clear. I usually do it twice. Then X out to desktop.
I have never had a virus found by AVG virus scanner during the auto night time scan after doing this for the last 7 to 8 months unless I forget to do this after being on bad surfing sites. (when on internet with IE(no protection); I usually use Fire Fox engine but slow for downloads)
clear java cache works every time.
but if you use firefox you won't get these problems in the first place, generally - from experience
That's weird I came to this site looking for the same solution and I only use Mozzila Firefox.

I click on java coffe cup but cant find cache what am i doing wrong
clicking on the java cup in the control panel and there is no "cache" tab at the top then you probably have the 1.5.0 version in which case it is on the bottom of the "general" tab and is listed as "temporary internet files" on that version. That is the version the I have also. Deleting them is the same as "cache" on the 1.4.02 version.
But how do I know which ones to delete? The display I have lists a wide variety and of course I'm hesitant to start "deleting" unless I understand what I'm doing. Thanks for any help.

just what it says "Temporary" or "cache" and it is OK to delete whatever is in there. I use the java version of TrendMicro's housecall so I don't delete that one but that is only because I am on dialup and don't want to have to have to download the scanning engine every time the I go there but it does no harm to delete it if you do.
Hi.Click on java coffee cup icon, click general tab, delete temporary internet files.(this is the cache)
the 1.5.0 version. The 1.4.02 version calls it cache. They are the same thing.
Would very much appreciate some assistance/clarification re removal of the above.
Followed your instructions to control, then to java cup, but was lost after that? I saw no drop down menus listing "cache" so had no way to click "clear"? Did I miss a step? How do I "X" out to desktop?
I've experienced some problems with Firefox as you seem to have too....would using Netscape v8.0 beta for surfing give as much protection as Firefox?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Andrew
got rid of java/byte verfy by unistaling both java and avg and reinstalling both.
to clear cache as above said click on java cup and delete files on next screen - all files temperary so safe to do .
as advised when uninstalling java did reinstall sun java instead.
In my Java on the controle panel I have no cache tab. How do I remove this virus??
Microsoft Java is considered less secure than Sun Java on XP machines, and so I would think that the same applies to Windows ME.
So, I would download and install Sun's Java, make sure it works ok, then uninstall Microsoft Java. However, looking at the majorgeek's forum I am not clear if the Microsoft Java removal tool suggested by them is for XP only, or for all Win 9x/ME computers.
You could of course, just disable Microsoft's Java, in Internet Explorer, Tools > Internet Options, then Advanced tab, scroll down to Microsoft VM and remove all the ticks. That's what I have done for my XP computer and have had no problems so far.
That may be the better option.
Good luck
