I am about to update to XP SP3 from SP2. In event I have problems or decide do not want to keep SP3, I am planning following as way to restore to SP2:
1. System restore point
2. Regedit export/backup
3. Use add/remove programs
Does anyone see any potential problems with this strategy or have alternate suggestions? Thanks
If not it should go well. However if there is malware damage the bets are off.
My thought is cloning the drive is the only real answer.

Onto a new drive then work from that one. It's surprising the stuff thats out there waiting to make your box hiccup. Like the fake svchost.exe, and the thingies that drop it off on here and there. Hallelujah for Hijackthis and Mbam.
That's the $Uninstall... folder in c:\windows. Easy to recognize by name and date.

I don't have the $Uninstall folder in Windows, neither of my three machines running XP Pro. I do have this one $hf_mig$ and it's hidden.
Did you ever install a Windows patch on this computer ?
prodded, and full blown SP3, all machines.
So you should have a $NTUninstall folder for each Windows patch with the program to uninstall it inside.
I/we/everyone gets them when a patch is installed. I let them sit for a few days and if there are no problems, move them to a folder called C:/updates_removed. I let them sit for a week or so and if still no problems, delete them.

They are blue (compressed) and hidden. Have a look.

If the upgrade does not go well format the machine and re-install with SP3. Backup your data first.
Have my HP set to AutoUpdate, and before I realised it, SP3 was twice downloaded automatically ..... and twice failed to install. Dont know why - dont really care since I didn't see, hear or experience any problems - it simply did not install.
Checked other forums here on CNet and found lots of good advice, but perhaps the key piece of advice was to download (save not install) SP3 from the microsoft site itself. Sorry, cannot remember why, but do remember that it made sense at the time.
So I did. Then took the usual precautions, Backed up my personal data, made a system restore point.... and then installed SP3. Went like a dream.
Incidently, I sat and watched the screen throughout the process, thus noticing that the SP3 download itself creates a system restore point, sp there's no need to do that if you don't wish to.
Good Luck.
