Does anyone know whether Windows XP will be discontinued and not updated any more by Microsoft? Thank you.
Yes, ALL of Microsoft products eventually reach what is known as an End of Life (EOL) state where they are no longer maintained in any way, except for special patches generally available only to very large clients.
I think, but someone else can probably confirm, that this will happen for XP sometime in 2012. There's a page on Microsoft's site, if you can manage to find it, that gives specific time frames for this.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/default.mspx and other Microsoft articles make no secrets about this.
If there will be no support for XP after 2014 what is the EOL for VISTA? Is it viable to purchase and use a system which does not evolve but is discontinued? New systems have always been plagued with bugs and system errors Vista is no different and I feel that no one should be forced to purchase a product against their will in the name of progress.
According to a web page dealing with Microsoft, Vista is to be replaced by Windows 7 beginning of 2010. It's to be what Vista was supposed to have been in the first place.

I don't see anyone forcing you to buy something against your will.
There are plenty of alternatives available.

Please read it in context...in the name of progress? Why discontinue a proven system (say again) in the name of progress? If XP goes, users will be forced to seek the alternatives. Alternatives cost money and it would be against my will as I am quite comfortable with the XP system
in 2014.
Only if you happen to have a retail version of XP you could install that on a new PC in 2014. Maybe. In fact, if it works, you really can do it, and you're not forced to spend money on a replacement.
If you've got an OEM version of XP, its license dies with your current PC. With the price of Vista being about equal to that of XP, there's no question at all of spending more money than if XP still was available.

Basically what this site is saying to is Windows XP users DO NOT have to TRUDGE through vista (unless they purchase a NEW PC), and if the next version of Windows BLOWS you will still have time to wait for the next release of Windows as we will continue updates for Windows XP until 2014.
(i.e, XP is a GREAT OS. PERIOD.)
Windows98 was also an excellent OS, until XP SP1 came up and we got used to it...
Always wondered - How would the world stand today if Windows 98 was thrown open to the world (open-sourced)...?
Makes me draw a parallel to what Netscape has become today after it was opened up in 2000...
But Microsoft would never do it. That would threaten their existence...
Yes, Windows XP will be continued for some time, according to Microsoft. And No, it will not be updated beyond SP3, Microsoft also saids.
