Is IE 7 running ok now?

by lablover - 2/22/08 12:18 PM

I'm still using IE 6 on a Win XP Sp2 Home machine.
I avoided loading IE 7 when it was released because of all of the rumors.
Now I'm having a problem with IE 6 and am hoping IE 7 will solve it.

Is IE 7 safe, and stable now? Any known problems??

Thanks!

Yes it is, but

I would sort out your IE6 problem first before upgrading to IE7.

Most IE7 problems seemed to be caused by unstable systems, and not by IE7 itself.

Tell us more about your problems with IE6.

IE 6 problem

by lablover - 2/22/08 1:49 PM In reply to: Yes it is, but by MarkFlax Moderator

MArk,
When I go to some sites, those with forums and click on a thread to view, the thread will display at the top, then jump to the end of that page, showing the last page.
I can't do a CTRL and HOME to go back to the top. It also will not page up and many times will not allow scrolling with the arrow keys. Scrolling with the mouse does work.
I've contacted the webmaster but he's been no help. It's very frustrating.

Try deleting al BHOs.

by MarkFlax Moderator - 2/23/08 2:00 AM In reply to: IE 6 problem by lablover

Browser Helper Objects, Google will help, and BHODemon will help you remove them.

Make sure your system is squeaky clean of viruses and spyware and for a double check take a couple of online scans as follows;

1] Anti-virus at http://housecall.trendmicro.com and

2] Anti-spyware at http://www.ewido.net

Let them delete all they find.

To ensure none are hiding in your System Restore backup files, turn System Restore off first. This deletes all SR backup files. Don't forget to reinstate System Restore afterwards and create a restore point. To disable System Restore - Right click the My Computer icon and select Properties, click the System Restore tab, select the option to disable System Restore.

After all that, download, install and run CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com . Make sure you watch the install process and opt out of installing the Yahoo toolbar if you don't want it. Then run CCleaner to remove all Temporary Internet Files, (TIF), temp files, history and cookies.

See if that helps.

I tried your suggestions

by lablover - 2/23/08 6:12 AM In reply to: Try deleting al BHOs. by MarkFlax Moderator

Went to Trendmicro site. It came up, then nothing. No prompts to run it.
Went to Ewido site and ran that. A pain to remove.

Download Ccleaner and ran that. Does this remove all cookies? God I hope not.

I don't know about BHO. Don't know if I need to remove or not.

CCleaner, cookies and BHOs.

by MarkFlax Moderator - 2/23/08 2:13 PM In reply to: I tried your suggestions by lablover

Yes Cleaner would remove all cookies. But it has the option to save the ones you want to keep and not delete them. Under Options > Cookies all your current cookies will be displayed, and you can move the ones you want to keep to the right hand column.

You will be surprised how many you have. If you have lost any it doesn't matter, the next time you visit a web site it will plant more cookies on yur system for you.

BHOs are so called Browser Helper Objects. The trouble is, most are unregulated addons, (unlike Mozilla Firefox's addons or extensions), and so they are a security risk. As with cookies, if you visit a site that needs these BHOs to display properly, the web site will either download and install them automatically, (if your IE security settings allow it), or ask if you want to download and install, (the preferred method).

BHOs are a common source of IE problems. If you upgrade from IE6 to IE7 with suspect or faulty BHOs then they will be transferred across and possibly give IE7 problems as well.

After all of that

by lablover - 2/23/08 4:14 PM In reply to: CCleaner, cookies and BHOs. by MarkFlax Moderator

Mark,

After doing as you suggested, yes I did lose my cookies, I visited the web site in question.
It still goes to the forum and displays the thread I want. That's fine. As soon as the page loads, it jumps to the end of the displayed page, and to see the thread from the top I have to scroll back to the top to begin reading. So things have not changed.

Isn't there an IE reinitialize, fix errors program from MS that is included with win xp home or within IE itself? I forgot the name if there is one.

THANKS,
Richard

A couple of links for you.

by MarkFlax Moderator - 2/24/08 3:10 AM In reply to: After all of that by lablover

Hi again lablover.

Have a look at the guidance in these two links;
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378

http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_ie6.htm

See if they help.

What I would do. Just in case IE stops working completely, leaving you with no internet access at all, I would use IE to download another browser, I use Firefox from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/ . Install that, check it to confirm it works OK and you can surf the internet, then try one of the repair IE options.

There are other browsers. SeaMonkey is another popular alternative.

I hope that helps.

Maybe your problem is with the forum itself. I go to a lot of forums and some have a setting where you can choose what happens when you open a forum subject. You can choose to go to the first post or the last!!!

I'm also considering upgrading from IE 6 to IE 7

by LandyReg - 2/22/08 2:54 PM In reply to: Yes it is, but by MarkFlax Moderator

I have the same thoughts as the OP.

I tried one of the other 'better' programs a year or so ago, and found it improved on IE in places but very awkward and clumsy to use.

My problems with IE6:-

When I save a webpage, some start to save, then slow down and/stop. Then a msg, appears - cant save page. Why?

When I've saved as a single file (.mht, why do they always open as a 1/3 screen size, even though I max. before closing them?

On those sites with maps using the navigator icons to the upper left. These icons display as an blank icon, but still work. All sites do this.

Other wise all is OK.

Generally speaking

by Jimmy Greystone - 2/22/08 12:47 PM In reply to: Is IE 7 running ok now? by lablover

Generally speaking, if you have a corrupted profile or settings in an older version of a program, upgrading to a newer one is only going to make matters worse.

That being said, IE7 may be a big step up in terms of security and even standards support over IE6, but it's still got a long ways to go before it catches up with the other browsers on both fronts. You really would be better off using something like Firefox or Opera as your primary browser, and saving IE for those special occasions where a website is poorly constructed and won't work with anything else.

I decided to upgrade

by LandyReg - 2/24/08 5:39 AM In reply to: Generally speaking by Jimmy Greystone

I'm not one for regularly upgrading my Windows system, but took a chance and went from IE6 to IE7.

I've seen a few improvements.

When I click on a link in Outlook 2002, it now opens a new tab, rather than replacing the open window. This means I don't loose what I had been displaying.

I wrote:-
"When I've saved as a single file (.mht, why do they always open as a 1/3 screen size, even though I max. before closing them?"

Now it opens full screen and in a new tab. Another improvement.

So worth the effort.

Hey Mark

I tried your suggestion of repairing IE 6, and did what you suggested above to repair. That ran without error messages.
Upon rebooting, I noticed that Outlook Express shortcut is no longer on the desktop, or on/in the bar next to the START button on the left bottom of the screen.
Outlook Express is also not available when you click on START, All Programs.
How can I get Outlook Express back???
