Cryptographic Service????

by Ed Bellah - 10/30/03 1:09 PM

I recently did a re-install of XP, now when I try to do a Windows Update, a few updates get installed but for the most part the installations fail and I get the message, 'be sure the cryptographic service is running.' Can anyone tell me what this means and how to I rectify it?

Here is a little more detail on my last post. The exact message is, 'Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer.'

Go to Administrative Tools | Services and make sure
Cryptographic Services is set to Automatic and that it is running.

Just double-click the item and change the settings.

Also make sure your PC clock is set to the correct time & date.

Thanks David, but another problem pops up.....

Thanks, David. I've checked and all settings are as they should be. Now, when I try to download and install an update I don't have the old cryptographic service problem any more, but, I tried to download a critical update (811630) it downloaded in a few seconds and then ran for 2 hours doing the install. The Install Progress meter filled up after 1 hour and 45 minutes but it continued to run and I finally had to re-boot to stop it. Does it really take that long to install one update?????

Try a manual install.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811630 writes about the patch and has a link where you can get just that patch without Windows Update.

The patches shouldn't take that long to install!

Check in Add or Remove Programs to see if that update is no the list.
If the install was aborted it should not be listed.

Then do a disk cleanup and delete your Temp files & TIF.

You might also want to run System File Checker.

Then try the manual D/L and install method suggested by Bob.

Follow-up for David

Thanks again for the info. Before starting the Windows update process I had set a restore point just in case. Now, I tried the manual download, but hung up again - ran for 1 1/2 hours with nothing happening. I just deleted TIF and cookies, and then ran the System File Checker - ran for 1 1/2 hours with no progress indicated on the Windows File Protection box. Also, Task Manager did not show anything running, but something was definitely running. My next step was to do a System Restore, but I find 'There are No Restore Points Available'. I think my next step is to dump this HP for a Dell or maybe a Gateway, but is there anything else you can think of to try before re-installing XP again (for the third time in a year)? I appreciate your patience.

2. Start | Run (type the following):

Did you install the patch for XP for your HP?
