A few days ago I got a virus through AIM called Adware.CDT, I don't know if there was anything else involved. My Norton caught it, but it seems like something still got through. I deleted the infected files and I have run Adaware, Spydetector, and Yahoo Anti-Spy a good 10 times each. Pretty much everything works except for REGEDIT, System Restore and ctrl/alt/del, as well as a few webpages. Whenever I try to open the registry editor, it automatically closes itself, and this is the same with ctrl/alt/del. When I tried System Restore it said that it could not restore to that date (and I tried all the dates that I had). Also hotmail.com does not work, which is my main email, and lexisnexis.com does not work, and I use that for Law School all of the time. I use this computer for everything that goes along with Law School and I don't have time to let someone else dig deeper into it right now, so any help that someone could give me would be great. Thanks
If you are using Windows XP just download xp_emegencyutil.exe from http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_emerutils.htm
Read the provided steps on how to use it to make those utility to work in terminating whatever suspicious entries you got.
If you are not using XP, rename the said files then run the renamed files.
Example: Taskmgr.exe --> rename it to Taskmgr_new.exe
try booting in safemode then run norton & adaware.sometimes norton cannot repair infected files so you have to tell it to quarantine them (the file could still be on your system)you also need to disable system restore when removing viruses as windows saves the file you just deleted.Hope this is of some help to you GOOD LUCK
forgot to mention in last post when you boot in safemode you should be able to edit the registry and remove the values added by the virus if you look on symantec site it will give you a list of values to delete
