Prevent virus spreading from the USB

by cybergully - 8/24/09 6:03 AM

I got the recycler virus once and found that my phone w300i got infected (cleaned by flashing it) and my sisters usb so didnt want to stick it into the computer again is there any software which would allow the usb port to be contained scanned and then allowed??

in the end took to the university and used the antivirus there to clean all flash drives :)

You need to disable autorun

by Donna Buenaventura Moderator - 8/24/09 9:53 PM In reply to: Prevent virus spreading from the USB by cybergully

Panda USB Vaccine to disable autorun for USB devices:
http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/downloads/usbvaccine/
That will help prevent malware from USB devices or removalbe drives to auto-run in Windows.

Some antivirus programs will scan removable or USB devices. Let us know what antivirus program do you use. You might only need to change the settings to allow it to scan the removable/USB devices.

post: http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6132_102-0.html?messageID=3061009#3061009 which you might want to review your settings on AntiVir Personal. Make sure that AntiVir is set to scan all files.

I hope all protection of your McAfee is disabled so no interference when AntiVir is doing its task :)
BTW, is your McAfee expired already?

You need to remove it then if you have no plan...

by Donna Buenaventura Moderator - 8/25/09 6:49 AM In reply to: its about to expire by cybergully

to renew McAfee :)

As to the noise, I just tried it here by plugging in a USB phone (Nokia) and there's no noise/sound. I don't have floppy drive though which is maybe why... I hear no noise.

If you don't use floppy drive often or not using it anymore, disabling it is your best work-around. You can also report to Panda Labs at http://research.pandasecurity.com/archive/Panda-USB-Vaccine-with-NTFS-Support.aspx (just post a comment in that blog entry of Panda and they will sure get back to you).

BSOD

by Donna Buenaventura Moderator - 8/26/09 10:52 AM In reply to: bad day with panda by cybergully

Not sure if your incompatible software with it or because you have 2 AV installed. I've been running without BSOD on Vista system. You can try to remove McAfee (if you do not plan to renew it) then re-install USB Vaccine by Panda if you want to try it again. Not sure if you want to try again but please note though that Microsoft update can disable autorun also. See their advisory for details on what updates you must have to have it disabled (if you have not install it).
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/967940.mspx

In addition, if you have configured AntiVir using the settings I referenced to you in my other post, any files that is being transferred from your USB device to your PC or vice-versa should be checked for malware by AntiVir.

by cybergully - 8/27/09 2:42 AM In reply to: BSOD by Donna Buenaventura Moderator

I think i'll leave panda for now, i really just wanted to be cautious cause 6 other people use the home pc other than me :) and viruses come on from all directions.

Thanks for the constant replies usually i'm left hanging elsewhere

it's always good to be cautious especially if you have more than 1 user on your PC.
