Just bought laptop, What should I use for anti-virus, ect?
by explosion81 - 8/24/08 11:12 AMHi, just bought a brand new hp dv5t with the new p8600 centrino 2 processor and all the works. Its being shipped to me as I type this, I have no protection as of right now. I can get the free McAfee with my comcast account but I heard its really not that good, and is a system hog, also heard the same thing about Norton. Also I am looking for spyware/adware protection and any other things I might need, suggestions? I read about avg and heard thats not so great either. So where do I turn to for reliable thorough protection thats either free or paid for? Any help would be greatly appreciated, more details the better. Thanks in advance! -Adam

We've had this discussion before and 98% of the protection is up to the owner and their behavior or use. If you install a trojan are you going to blame the antivirus?
I've used all of the free antivirus and the usual 2 firewalls and nothing happens here. Of course I don't fall for the current XP ANTIVIRUS 2008 trap.

Try AVG Free the most recent version (recommended) or Windows Live One Care. Both can be downloaded for free from the internet.

You did mention your ISP offers its "user protection bundle" which is a decent offering, see how it works for you, if no good, pitch it and try a freebie or one you buy. (1) AVG 8 Free edition. (disabling link scanner)
(2) COMODO firwall Pro.
(3) McAfee SiteAdvisor.
i used these applications for more than a year without any problem despite my daily internet browsing and downloading.
there are many alternatives which i tried. but the above applications are the best in their field.

These are simple programs requiring only updates from time to time. Use few resources and mainly just sit there blocking bad things before they have a chance to get on the computer.
Google for them... been using both of these without any infections for years. Give them a try.

I have had no conflicts or any other type problems with these apps. I do a lot of surfing and downloading.

I use the free Home Edition but they also offer and enhanced proversion that you can pay for.

It warns me anytime it locates suspected files (or even websites which have such files)!
If an infected file is located, the program warns you both verbally and with a siren, and gives several varying options as to what to do!
I can't believe the programmers are still giving this away for "free"!
It checks out all files on your hard drive and also offers "free" online monitoring protection! (And as long as you leave it turned on -it gives you an almost daily update, keeping it continuously current!
How can you beat that?

Avast finds things all the time - I often get tracking cookies as I do a lot of research, and I'm very glad I have it.
Zone Alarm is fab, but not just for outside threats. I really like it because many new programs are constantly "phoning home" with MY information. I choose when and where that happens - whether the manufacturer intends to allow me to or not.
I also use the free version of Ad Aware, but I'm finding that Avast picks up many more threats than that does.
After being burned royally with a triple Norton 2007 package (paid) a few years back that slowed my computers to a crawl, you won't catch me paying for another anti virus. Because I was a loyal customer and bought more than a month before my subscription with the old version ran out, they refused me a refund. Penny wise and pound foolish. Now I'm free.

I have been using it for over 7 years. Their firewall is additionally superb, unfortunately you have to be interactive with it. THey let you have 30 day free trials and the software is still active after the time period. The app is not a hog like nortons and macaslob...

AVH uses a vastly smaller footprint (number of system resources), doesn't infect your computer with itself, is not targetted as heavily by viruses, and whenever I install AVG on a system previously running Norton, AVG generally finds several viruses that have been missed. I have been using AVG for well over 10 years, and I have never been successfully infected, the resident shield and new internet scanner stop them all in their tracks before they even have a chance to get embedded.

I propose that you download, from PC Tools, Threat Fire, because It covers all of the Security and Spyware that you require in one package. I use it and I like it.
