How to remove Total Security (Uninstall Guide)

by Marianna Schmudlach Moderator - 3/19/09 9:56 PM

What this programs does:

Total Security is a rogue anti-spyware program that is a clone of Antivirus 360. This program is installed via Trojans that display fake security alerts about threats to your computer and then installs Total Security without your permission on to your computer. Once installed, Total Security will scan your computer and display a variety of infections that cannot be removed until you purchase the program. These infections, though, do not really exist and are being shown to scare you into purchasing the program. While running, Total Security will constantly barrage you with nag screens and fake security warnings about problems on your computer. Just like the fake infection results, these alerts are just a tactic being used to scare you into purchasing the program. Last, but not least, you will see a window labeled Total Security Protection Center that impersonates the legitimate Windows Security Center. This protection center states that your computer has no protection and recommends that you purchase Total Security. It goes without saying that you should not purchase anything from this company.

Recent virus attacke

by cardinal12 - 8/20/09 4:23 PM In reply to: How to remove Total Security (Uninstall Guide) by Marianna Schmudlach Moderator

I just got the Total Security virus today.
Somethings are different from what you described:
1) There is a message covering my entire screen - it is a bogus warning screen.
2) I have tried to download and run the MS Process Explorer but it "seems" to be hidden behind the "warning screen"
3) How do I get around this screen saver?
4) Also - firefox does not work but IE does.

Thanks,

Cardinal

Are you able to use.......

by Marianna Schmudlach Moderator - 8/20/09 6:20 PM In reply to: Recent virus attacke by cardinal12

Windows Task Manager ?

If YES - look for a process named tsc.exe. and DISABLE it.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.33) and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
If you have a previous version of MBAM, remove it via Add/Remove Programs and download a fresh copy.

* Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
* Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
* When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
* When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
o Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
o Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
* Then click Finish.

MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.

* If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
* Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
* If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.

On the Scanner tab:

* Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
* Then click on the Scan button.
* If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
* The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
* When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
* Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.

Back at the main Scanner screen:

* Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
* The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Notes: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes. Click this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled.

And IF you are not able to download these tools on your machine, please use a friend's or family member's computer and download the Malwarebytes tool and it's manual update from the link below.. Once downloaded, rename the program installer "mbam-setup.exe" file to something else like "Your Name.exe", then copy the installer file and the update file to a CD or flash drive.. Transfer the file to the problem machine, then install the "Your Name.exe" file, then run the update to get the program current.. After that, run a full system scan and delete anything it finds.

Having trouble running Malwarebytes software

by wb1442 - 9/9/09 8:27 AM In reply to: Are you able to use....... by Marianna Schmudlach Moderator

Hi Marianna,

I followed your instructions and the install went fine. However, when the program starts up it dies shortly thereafter, like something kills it. The update popup starts up and gets about half way done and dies. Then the Malwarebytes software starts up, but it, too, dies shortly after startup. Any ideas? Is there something else I should use?

Thanks

Hi,

did you have to rename the program installer "mbam-setup.exe" file to something else like "Your Name.exe" ?

IF "yes", did you ALSO go to the MBAM folder ( C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) and rename the "mbam.exe" file within the folder? And then did you double-click on the "Your Name.exe" in order to run it?

Thanks for the reply. I did some more digging and found out I needed to kill the tsc process and remove the tsc.exe file before I could proceed. After doing that, I was able to follow your instructions and successfully remove the malware. Thanks again for all the info. It save me lots of time and headaches.
