Steady State v Malware updates on PACs

by JannyMallard - 11/30/08 8:40 AM

Am a non-geek administrator of small network of Public Access Computers. Tech help is over two hundred miles away and even further budget-wise.

Having problems with kids and their 'toons/games loading the PACs up with spyware. Would like to try Microsoft Steady State as a means of keeping the machines humming the way I set them up as opposed to what the bored 12 year-olds want. It just makes my job easier if the machines stay the way I set them up. We don't have money in the budget for real tech help.

Anywho, was told SteadyState wouldn't allow for automatic updates of my AVG malware/virus protection. So, how would I go about doing daily AVG updates if I put Steady State on the computers?

Would I have to daily reconfigure the Steady State too? How involved is that? I only get 20 hours a week and trying to run a small library with that time. I really don't have hours a week to spend on computer maintenance. Need some easy to handle methods. Am married to the AVG until March 2010. Thinking of switching to vipre at that time.

The AVG does seem to catch stuff, but kids come in after update/computer tests and sometimes they borrow trouble for me. And I want to make sure all patron info/changes are scrubbed at close of day.

Thanks for any help, oh great gurus of cnet!

...

The help menu gives the following direction
"You may be able to automatically update your security program using Windows SteadyState in one of two ways:

* Schedule Windows SteadyState to automatically update the security program detected by Windows SteadyState and shown in the Security Program Updates box.
* Write a custom script to apply the updates you want at the scheduled date and time for automatic updates.
* You can perform security program updates automatically as part of the critical updates process if Windows SteadyState detects an antivirus or security product it can update. At time of publication, Windows SteadyState currently detects and includes scripts for updating the following security products:
* Computer Associates eTrust 7.0
* McAfee VirusScan
* Windows Defender
* TrendMicro 7.0
This feature can work with other antivirus or security products. If you have a desire to use an antivirus or security product other than those listed, you can prepare a signature update script for it as described in your antivirus software manual. Signature update scripts can also be run manually. For more information on installing signature updates manually

Yeah, I see lots of anti-virus it can work with, but alas, AVG seems missing, which is sorta what I heard before.
