Most often, I am wanting to view a document, but don't need to make any changes to it. So obviously, loading up Open Office is a little over-kill, since it's loading all the editing functions. Same with Adobe Acrobat Reader, though I'm not sure why it has such bloat.
For pdf, I have found sumatra PDF, but thus far, I don't know of any slim & fast .odt and/or .doc readers. I was hoping maybe one of you can suggest a good freeware program?
Microsofts Word viewer: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3657ce88-7cfa-457a-9aec-f4f827f20cac&DisplayLang=en
There are companion programs for Excel and Powerpoint available also.
You'll need the compatibility pack also to view Office 2007 .docx format: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&DisplayLang=en
For .odt try http://www.officeviewers.com/ It says it also supports MS Word format.
Everything above is free.
Hope this helps.

yes, that should be good ... thanks ![]()
Quick View Plus 10.
I have been using this software for many years. it will view just about any document. It is distributed by Avanstar. The current version will read about 300 different file formats including those in e-mail attachments.
sorry for the delay, I forgot about this thread for a little while ...
I looked at Quick View Plus' web site, and I see it's paid-for software ($46), and as I'm a student "strapped for cash," that isn't something I'm highly interested in at the moment. The original suggestion for TextMaker works quite well for me. ![]()
Thanks for the suggestion, though!
All Macs come with the two programs you need pre-installed that open quickly:
When you don't want to use Adobe Reader or Acrobat, Apple's "Preview" app works great. Likewise, instead of using Microsoft Office or AppleWorks, "Text Edit" (known as "SimpleText" in Classic OS) does the trick great, and even as simple composition capability.
this wouldn't apply to me, as I unfortunately don't have the funding for any apple products, but does Text Edit show the formatting of a Word document?
