Safari, Leopard, Snow Leopard, oh my!

by boni777 - 6/17/09 11:29 AM

So, once again, I'm confused. I've been looking through google and the more info I get, the more confused I am. What is the difference between Safari and Leopard? I found out that when the s/l comes out, it can/will have Safari 4 imbedded in it.
So, I thought Safari and Leopard were different O/S, (like XP and Vista), but now I'm not sure.
Could you please clear me up

Here is the skinny

Safari is a web browser which is currently on Version 4
Leopard is a version of Mac OS X (10.5.x)
Snow Leopard is the next version of OS X (10.6)

Snow Leopard will almost certainly install the latest version of Safari but you can use Software Updater to install it now as it is the current Apple web browser.

Does that clear things up.

Yes, for the most part, thank you.

But an add on question: My machine tells me that I have O/S 10.5.6, but does not mention Leopard. So, what else would I have?

OS X 10.5

You won't find OS X 10.5.x called Leopard anywhere but on the box it came in. It's simply a marketing name for advertising.

10.0 = Cheetah

10.1 = Puma

10.2 = Jaguar

10.3 = Panther

10.4 = Tiger

10.5 = Leopard

10.6 = Snow Leopard

There was also a public beta called Kodiak according to Wikipedia. Go Figure.

I removed your post because it was confusing and incorrect.

OS X 10.5.x is known as Leopard.

The new operating system that will be released later this year, is OS X 10.6.x and will be known as Snow Leopard.

Hope that clears things up for you
