I am ready to purchase a mac but need to be able to remotely access pc at work. Is this possible running win xp with Fusion in the mac?
Logmein or TeamViewer.
Logmein allows you to establish multiple PC/Mac's with which you want to contact/control.
It is free. Just Google Logmein.
TeamViewer does kinda the same thing but requires that someone is on the other end. It too, is free.
You can control a PC from a Mac or vice versa.
Any good?

That is really helpful, thank you. Do you prefer one to the other? How are these different from using the Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection client for Windows?
the Logmein one as this works through firewalls and home routers and does not require that there be someone at the other end to supply you with the "code number" to connect.
TeamView is fine for the tech support jobs, where you are on the phone with the machine owner.
Try the Logmein, you have nothing to lose as it is free.
Let us know how you get on.
How is this different from M$ RDP for Windows? You don't need to run Windows on your Mac!
P
There is a (prettier but slower, like most Mac equivalents of software) RDP client from Microsoft themselves for OS X, now in UB flavour. Go to Mactopia - it'll be a download option.
If it's work, I presume you have some sort of VPN access. That, knowledge of the IP address of the Windows machine (and if applicable, a request to IT to make a DHCP reservation for your machine so that it always has the same address), plus the RDP client for Mac is all you need.
I also use Logmein. The two great things for me are:
(1) It's free
(2) It works across platforms...it seems that you can use it on Linux, though they don't support it. I haven't tried it yet, but if they do support it you can go between Linux, Windows and OS X in any combination
I've been using it for nearly a year now, and I definitely have no complaints so far. I guess another option is VNC, Leopard comes with VNC set up already, it takes a bit more work on Windows...
Thanks to everyone for all the great info. This will be for work but I am an amateur at this remote access thing and we are not a sophisticated network. I am a new mac user, and I'm just trying to figure out the best (easiest) way to do this when I am all set up. Logmein sounds like the best choice for me, but at the risk of sounding like an idiot, what is VPN & VNC?
VPN = Virtual Private Network.
Basically, instead of connecting to your remote machine via a fixed, dedicated, network connection, you connected to it by creating a VPN, which is carried on another network (The internet in your case). It can, but does not have to, offer a secure connection between computers even though it is carried over a public network.
VNC = Virtual Network Computing.
Provides a means of viewing and controlling a remote machine. The user usually sees, and operates, the remote computer in a window on their machine.
The system uses a protocol which is supported on all platforms.
There are a number of different programs available that use this protocol, logmein is just one of them.
Hope that helps a little
P
Everything is cleaer now, thanks. Is there another VNC protocol that you recommend besides logmein and teamviewer?
you could try Microsoft Remote Desktop which will allow you to connect to a remote PC.
or
Chicken of the VNC
Both are free.
Let us know how you get on
