Do you mean from inside your computer, like folder to desktop
or
Do you mean from some external source?

Those icons

Does this happen with everything that you try to drag onto the desktop?

Remember that a cluttered desktop will effectively slow down your computer as OS X treats each icon on the desktop as an open window.
Life is so much easier if your Applications life in the Applications folder and your documents in the Documents folder.
Drag applications from the Applications folder, into the dock to create an alias (shortcut) to launch the program.
Put your documents folder in the dock, instant access to all your stuff.

Back in the day, before OS X, we would rebuild the desktop to restore missing icons, but that only worked for those occasions that the icons had reverted to a generic one.

Do you have Spaces activated. Check in System preferences for this.

Try repairing permissions: Go to Disk Utility, click the First Aid tab, choose your disk in the LH window and then click the Repair Permissions button at the bottom of the RH window.

Try some drag and drop and see what happens.

Let us know
