leave the icons where the currently are, in the trash, and wait to see if you see any application with a missing icon.
Chances are that you will not.
There is really no easy way to easily put everything back to where it was, except with Time Machine or by doing an complete reinstall of the system from the Restore CD's that came with the machine. Of course, this would mean that everything that you had done to the Mac would have to be done over again and anything that you created and saved, would be lost.
An Archive and Install, which preserves your data, would also be an option.
However, as I said, leave it all alone until find what is missing.
Meanwhile, do NOT delete the trash.
If you can live with that, your next step is to create an account for your son. One in which he does not have the right to put anything in the trash. Cuts down on the heartburn.
Good luck

All caps is considered to be shouting. Your questions get noticed just as quickly when you use lower case.
It's a protocol thing.

Hi and thanks
Yes every Image that was in the Images folder is in the Trash I have noticed that when I open a file now there is no image asscociated with it ?
Is a re install difficult I dont have much on the machine it is basically brand new ?
just insert the disk that came with your machine,
Restart and hold down the "C"key when you hear the chime.
Keep it down until you see the spinning "gear"
Follow the instructions from there.

And, as mentioned, once the 'installer' loads, choose 'archive and install'; you shouldn't need a complete install; eg you don't need to zero out your HDD, etc. It was also wise advice to set up an account for you son...until he learns that the only things he should trash are emails from his principal and porn pics he's downloaded. The Mac OS is supremely user-friendly, but there are certain prefs, files, etc that should never be messed with...unless you know exactly what you're doing. You can also learn a lot at apple.com>support>discussions. Just don't be alarmed at the number of questions/problems. If you follow basic maintenance procedures and 'safe' internet browsing, you'll have years of near trouble-free use of you Mac. Post back if you run into any problems.
