I'd reformat the OS...

by FrankQC - 6/5/09 7:45 AM In reply to: Increasing Computer Performance. by bigd6281

Seeing as how 387MB is slow for XP (on personal experience anyways).

If reformating doesn't fix it... You can always buy a $400-300 Netbook and boot Linux on your 387MB computer.

Linux or XP

by Ol Rod - 6/8/09 7:00 PM In reply to: Whats the Diffrence? by bigd6281

I'm suprised Frank didn't reply, here. Linux runs "lighter", requires less resources than XP, and so runs a bit quicker on slower computer (387 mb RAM). If you have never ran linux, there is a bit of a learning curve. XP does many things automatically for you that the user has to "make" linux do. To the user who wants control over what goes on in his computer linux is better, because all the windows OS will sometimes do things "for" you that is not always what the user wanted.
Oh, by the way, I am running XP, and Windows 7 right now, but on 2 Gig. of RAM.

Here's the difference

by FrankQC - 6/8/09 7:08 PM In reply to: Whats the Diffrence? by bigd6281

As Ol Rod said, Linux runs on a lot lighter resources.

I was able to run Linux in a virtual machine that had 64MB of Memory and it ran fine. There was no GUI, though, it was all code. With GUI I was able to run it on ~128MB.

Most Linux = programmed for free by communities and not owned by companies. Ubuntu is owned by a company (Canonical).

And again as Ol Rod said, there is a learning curve.. BUT.. Ubuntu is made for newcomers to Linux. They made it so it is an easier transition from the Windows world to the Linux/open-source world.

If you have any more questions reply to this thread and I'll reply.

p.s. sorry I didn't reply, been studying Law.

Answers to some of your questions

by FrankQC - 6/11/09 2:17 PM In reply to: I Did It by bigd6281

Is there a nTask Manager Like windows?

Yes. System > Administration > System Monitor

What virus protecton should i use?

You don't need any antivirus. IF you really want one, though, try ClamAV. But it's not necessary. Linux will run fine without a virus scanner because even if you install Linux viruses (which do exist), they won't have the right privilidges to execute, so nothing will happen. All the .exe viruses that you will download will come to a hault because Linux cannot run .exe (unless you run a Windows Emulator such as WINE)

How do i get programs like itunes, notepad++, utorrent etc... to go well with ubuntu

iTunes: An alternative is RhythmBox. It will recognize your iPod, etc. You can sync your stuff with your iPod using that program.

Notepad++: An alternative is gedit. It's like Notepad except you choose which programming language you'll be programming in. So if you choose, for example, Java... It will highlight all the "if, else, then, import" and etc.

uTorrent: There's a torrenting client on Ubuntu. Applications > Internet > Transmission BitTorrent Client.

When you want to INSTALL a program, open up a terminal and type sudo apt-get install (program name)

So for example, typing sudo apt-get install rhythmbox will install RhythmBox on your computer. To run Rhythmbox you can either look under your Applications menu, or you can open a terminal and type rhythmbox & exit and it will open Rhythmbox then close the terminal. Note that if you only type rhythmbox and then close the terminal as it's running, Rhythmbox will close because it is dependent on the terminal.

To update your computer, type sudo apt-get update
To upgrade your computer, type sudo apt-get upgrade

The beauty of this is that with that ONE command, you can update or upgrade everything in your computer without having to reboot (unless it's a Kernel upgrade, then you have to reboot to use the newer Kernel version. If you don't reboot you'll still use the older kernel which is still fine).

Ubuntu is Linux. So there's a lot of customization. You can download new themes at gnomelooks.org (or something like that, check google: "gnome looks")

To get shockwave on Ubuntu, (to watch youtubes?), Firefox will automatically recognize that you won't have shockwave and will ask you to "install missing plugins" or something. For Youtube, they use Flash Player.

If you need any more help just reply to this thread,
Frank.

Answers to your questions

by FrankQC - 6/18/09 1:55 PM In reply to: A little more help by bigd6281

1.Hard drive space is limited as to how big your hard drive is (obviously). To increase the partition use a program called "GPARTED" ( sudo apt-get install GPARTED ). Note: It's dangerous to use if you don't know what you're doing because there's a chance you can 'accidentally' delete your NTFS (Windows) partition. Make sure you follow online documentation so you don't make any silly mistakes.

2. sudo apt-get remove cario-dock -y;
Avant can go on Linux? I didn't know that. haha. I've never used it. And I cannot find it in the Synaptics.

Last Question im using cario, but the no matter what theme i use ith as a big black like highlight thing and it suround the dock its annoying how od i remove it ?

Post 14 of 30

Did you play in the settings?

by FrankQC - 6/18/09 3:05 PM In reply to: Last but Not Least by bigd6281

Does the black highlight look out of the ordinary?

If it looks out of place are you using proprietary video drivers? You use those for hardware acceleration, maybe that's not the problem but if it was it's an easy fix (for my video card anyway).
