by thesux - 5/20/09 6:05 PMOk folks, here's my question today. Some will find it obvious while other my scratch theirs heads like I did.
Is PCIe really better then PCI? In term of speed yes, it's better i know, however the thing I want to know is if we put 2 graphic card with the same mb (I.E 512 mb) Will PCIe upgrade video performance by much?
Because I currently have a 8400 GS (512 mb PCI. The best I can get from my PCI slot. I have a sli ready motherboard with a dual core overclocked to the max. Ask me why I still have a PCI card.)
Today, I tryed playing Crysis demo. Yeah, you bet it, everything on low setting and still lagging.
Now, if I buy a PCIe card of equal mb, will it improve my gaming?

The 8400 is in the basement of this genre card. By Saturday I'll have the last known PCI card (to me at least) to swap out the 8400 PCI card for a 9400GT PCI card. At first I resisted doing that but the specs are enough for me to take a leap of faith here.
I'll report back next Sat or week from now.

by ramarc - 5/21/09 6:03 AM In reply to: PCI vs PCIe by thesuxthe GPU is the primary factor. all pci-express video cards suitable for recent games (like crysis) now have at least 512mb. more memory will help the card a bit in certain games, but it will not overcome the improvements of a better GPU.
an 8400gs is a low-end GPU and not really a gamer. a geforce 9600gt (about $80) is the minimum GPU you should consider if you want decent gaming performance.

Unless your videocard is faster than the PCI bus, then PCI vs PCIe doesn't matter.
If you are running newer, higher-end cards, or multiple cards, it might matter. But with an 8400 GS the PCI slot is more than adequate.

I have this card on a 2.4GHz Athlon 64 2GB RAM etc and it's just barely acceptable.
TODAY the PCI version with the 9400GT arrives and we'll see if that cures it.

Why are you using PCI for Video?

Now, as to your question, YES, PCIe is ***POTENTIALLY*** MUCH faster than PCI (and so, for that matter, is AGP if you are talking about video). Note the word "potentially". The capability for performance is there. That does not mean that every application and ever device will need it, use it, or for that matter care.

And to be honest, I tryed game like Bioshock (Which require a good video card imo) and I run it on high/max no problem.
So yeah, I wanted to know if it would make a big difference. Apparently you said *maybe*.

Are you 100% sure you don't have a PCIe slot ? I'm not aware of any MBs that offer Sli that aren't PCIe ...so exactly what make/mfg, series and model number PC or MB do you have ? And you don't have to spend $500 to get decent gaming video...there's lots of REASONABLE options.

I have it connected to some HP 1680x1050 display with DVI to HDMI and a HDMI cable.
It's a nice step up from the 8400GS so if you have to stick to PCI, this might be the current champ.

Yeah, I inded have a PCIe slot, 2 to be exact, but in my old pc I only have PCI slot so I had to deal with that. And where did you buy your 9500 GT? And for how much?
For PCIe I would not get this card.

I found mine at geeks.com. I see it's at amazon.com too. The model number is: SP94GT512D2LHPP
It has just the card, driver CD and if you need them, low profile brackets. I have not put a Watt Meter on it yet.
