I just recently got a new desktop with vista premium installed. I got a large monitor with hopes of using it as a TV as well. I wanted to purchase an external tuner like the Hauppauge 950q but was discouraged in learning all about encyption on channels. I recieve around 80 channels in my cable package and have no cable box (right out of the wall). Will I be able to view all of these channels just hooking the cable from the wall coax to the tuner? The service is Direct TV channels that my apartment complex buys, receives at the office then are distributed via coax throughout the complex, but again I need no decoding or boxes to recieve the channels just plug my TV to the wall. Will it work with my computer? Im not really interested in the expense if I only get the networks.
Seen the FAQ for that device? The clear line to your apartment sounds like it's not encrypted. Check the FAQ reqarding your issue:

Hope this helps.

ok yes, so basically what I am asking is if my TV's get this signal direct from the wall with no decryption device than that must mean it is "clear" QAM and I will get all my channels if I am understanding correctly. (thanks for the reply)
encrypted/premium channels are only available with a cable box. you'll also get your local hd channels and any other hd channels that aren't encrypted. these are transmitted via QAM and in-the-clear (aka clear QAM).
Shehhh.....
Yes I know its a sketchy deal my apartment complex has all the control over the cable. They put together the package then pipe it on to us. The only reason I know they get it from direct TV is that when they advertise another channel "now on discovery direct TV channel 271", only my discovery on my TV is twenty. Its strange I know but I am assuming that since I am downstream of the decryption I should be good to go. (fingers crossed as I already bought the thing... will be pretty 9!$$&6 off if it doesn't work) If not you can be checking e-bay for a brand new in box 950Q in the next couple days!!
Unfortunately, with the advent of the new digital format change for all broadcasters, if you presently get analog signals over cable, you will now be required to get a set top box from the cable company to convert their digital only signals to analog for your TV and tuner device for your PC. This upgrade by the cable provider has created a real headache for those of us who don't want to buy a new digital ready set. We will be required to rent/lease a box from the service provider. All analog sets will become obsolete because the tuners will not find any signals at all. A converter box will allow you to tune these signals but will take away the watch one channel/record another option.
I called my basic TV cable subscription provider, Comcast. A rep said comcast will no longer broadcast any analoge signal after about June. He said analog channels like my favorite the Sc-Fi channel will change to digital. He said I need to go to my local Comcast store and get a free digital to analoge conveter.
I went to my local Comcast store and after waiting in line for 45 min., was told by three different reps that such a comcast box did not exist because Comcast will continue to provide an analog signal for the forseeable future. I would guess maybe they would down convert themselves and send out over the cable the converted signal.
It did not seem useful to contact Comcast again for another contradictory reply, so I seem to be left just waiting to see what happens in June.
If anyone has better information, it would be greatly appreciated.
You said "with the advent of the new digital format change for all broadcasters, if you presently get analog signals over cable, you will now be required to get a set top box from the cable company to convert their digital only signals to analog for your TV and tuner device for your PC."

That's not what we are being told here by Cox Cable. They are running ads many times a day 'You are connected to Cox Cable, Your TV will continue to work just fine."
Since we have the Cox set top box here I can't really say for sure, but the old boxes work fine yet and many local stations went digital on Feb. 17th.
Warning! Your mileage may vary!
Yes
I bought the Hauppauge 1600 card and plugged my cable directly in to the TV connector and it works fine. I have insight cable and don't use a set top box near my pc. My tuner card has dual tuners with the other one being the ATSC Digital TV connector. I did try the cable in that one,but got nothing. I haven't been able to figure out what format Insight broadcasts in, but I assume it's their digital 5.0(or whatever version it's up to now). I can get all of the channels I got previously when it went directly to the tv.
As mentioned earlier, if you already have cable, there should be no need for a converter box.
It seems to me a hardware problem. Moreover it can also be the SMPS starting problem or May be due to the fan problem. In this case the fan starts for just 1-4 seconds & then turns off!
So first let me know if its getting off after a beep sound or just not getting even to windows splash screen
