PSU Replacement

by ndhelp001 - 1/8/09 10:11 AM

Hi,

After reading a few of the threads here, I am looking to update my PC psu. The fan does not work, and I have been experiencing some power up issues that started last week. I did the test at coolfan.com or whatever it is, and it only showed one working, but the temp of my pc was under 56c, whatever that means.

My system is a whitebox system that I purchased a couple of years ago:

Windows XP Pro SP3
Asrock P4VM800 motherboard
Intel P4 3.0ghz
2gig ddr ram (2x1gb sticks)
Sanyo CD-ROM
512mb HD
PNY Nvidia NVS 280 Dual Monitor AGP video card
Running 2 19" monitors (1 lcd and 1 crt)
Printer
Dsl modem

Found a couple of 700w models for under $100 from good manufacturers. Since I have not replaced one of these, I would appreciate if anyone could help me make sure that either of these would work with my machine (connectors, etc.)

Thank you.

Since You Didn't Give Us The PSU Model or Make..

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 1/8/09 11:03 AM In reply to: PSU Replacement by ndhelp001

..I can only give generic information.. Power supply units of 700 watts will work fine as long as they fit the case and they have the right cable connectors.. In order to confirm both are appropriate, I open the case of the computer, measure the size of the PSU box and I write down the specific measurements so I can compare when I make the purchse.. Then I eyeball the wired connections and plugs to make sure needed plugs are there..

As long as everything is there, it should work fine.

Hope this helps.

Sorry, forgot the models that I am looking at:

Coolmax CTI-700B

Sigma Focus SP700B

Leaning more towards the Coolmax, if it fits, since it seems to have a 5yr warranty.

thanks

I like Coolmax too but either one will satisfy the bill as long as the form factor, etc. work out.

Hope this helps.

PSU order

Grif,

Checked everything out, and the Coolmax looks like the dimensions should fit my case measurements. Couldn't find them for the Sigma, probably the same. But I ordered the Coolmax, better warranty, etc. Only drawback I read by some people, was that they needed longer connection cables for some of their units.

Hopefully it will work.

Thanks for your help.

Coolmax

Took about a good 15 min to install, mainly because it was the first time I did this. It's up and running, and seems to be quiet. My old psu had some bulging caps, and looked pretty used up. Speedfan is showing that everything is running nice and cool.

Thanks for the help.
