Problem with two Operating systems

by sankvis - 5/23/08 7:11 AM

I had recently replaced the Motherboard. The earlier operating system had become corrupt due to problems with the Motherboard.

I had installed Win XP from the original CD. I had not removed the earlier operating system. Now I find that a directory called Windows0 has been created for the new installation. The earlier operating system continues in Windows directory.

At the time of starting I get an options page asking me to choose between the two Win XP operating systems.

I would like to remove this options page and load directly to the new operating system. I would also like to delete the old operating system files.

How do I go about it?

The operating system is Win XP Pro SP2.

Thank you.

The best option

The best option is to simply format the drive and install Windows again. Maybe make yourself an XP SP3 slipstreamed install CD while you're at it.

If you neglect not to do this, you will want to find and download some program that will edit the boot.ini file for you to remove the extraneous boot option. Just be sure you remove the correct one or you're going to be kind of stuck. After you do that, you can delete the old Windows directory tree. Leave the Windows0 one alone, because that should be the one you're using. Though it might be prudent to simply rename the "Windows" one, until you know for sure whether it's "Windows" or "Windows0" that your system is booting from. You can always use the recovery console to put things back if you rename the wrong one. This is why formatting is just easier.

After you get all that done, you should set about installing SP3. If you happen to have an HP system with an AMD CPU, then you should be sure to go download an update from HP's website that will fix the reboot loop problem they created out of negligence and/or laziness, take your pick. It shouldn't be a problem for any other system.

Problem Solved

Thanks for the response.

There is a utility in Win XP Pro for modifying the Boot.ini file. There is an article about this here. This deals with exactly the same problem that I was facing.

Deleted the additional operating system and made the present system as default. Now the computer loads directly into the new operating system.

worse is re-format C: then just put one one version.
stuip is to hurt one so it won't work, but you srill are promt to go to it. you can't move it to another hard drive, you will still have the log-in screen.
I assume your hard drive is large enjoy not to be full.
Best is to enjoy it, log into rither, put important things in one, and secure it with password. then ours can use the other verion of xp. Does it cause you a problem, other then one more log-in screen? Add vista to one for a test. I do believe that you will learn to like it. Leroy
