Hi, I have a Windows XP Home Edition SP2 Pentium 4 PC and I was wondering how can I create a new Desktop shortcut for a Internet Explorer icon for whatever website I want. I thought it would be as simple and right-clicking, choosing New Shortcut, typing in the URL, the name of this shortcut's icon and hitting Finish. But once I did this, and double-clicked the icon I just created, it would show this:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\MSN Homepage.url on the address bar, and:
[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://www.msn.com/
Modified=B032081E7BA2C801EE
in this window. What am I doing wrong, please help me!!!
Open Internet Explorer, go to favourites, right click on the URL you want the shorcut for, select 'copy', close I.E. and right click anywhere in the desktop, select 'paste'.
Hi there. I tried your way and it works no problem. But the moment I double click the Internet Explorer Webpage icon, it takes me to exactly the same message in my post. I don't know what's wrong. I tried just right-clicking on my other Windows PC and chose New Shortcut, typed in the URL and boom, it works perfectly. I googled a search and found that it's something related to the Folder Options in Control Panel. I thought I found the solution, but still I have no luck. Please help me if you can. Thanks.
right click on the desktop (or wherever you want the shortcut) and select New > Text Document.
Double click on that New Text Document.txt file and use the following format substituting the complete URL to the actual page you want)
[DEFAULT]
BASEURL=http://www.microsoft.com
[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://www.msn.com/
Now simply save the document and exit notepad.
Last but absolutely necessary, RENAME that New Text Document.txt file Microsoft.URL (for the example above) and you will have a functioning web document shortcut. The way you created the file it will have a *.LNK file extension which will not work but it will have the modified date/time group which isn't actually necessary.
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\MSN Homepage.url on the address bar, and:
[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://www.msn.com/
Modified=B032081E7BA2C801EE
This would make the whole shortcut read -
[DEFAULT]
BASEURL=http://www.microsoft.com
[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://www.msn.com/
Modified=B032081E7BA2C801EE
Now save the text file and RENAME IT from Microsoft.LNK to Microsoft.URL as it MUST have the .URL file extension. The last line - Modified=??????whatever??? is actually not necessary.
Hi, there, what would I substitute in DEFAULT, or is it supposed to be left alone that way.? Also, what do I put inside the second square brackets? Sorry, I'm not very technical with computers.
an actual WORKING shortcut to Microsoft.com. Right click on your desktop as I told you and select New > Text Document. Double click that New Text Document.txt and copy and paste this bolded text (and nothing else) into Notepad (which opened when you double clicked the new file).
[DEFAULT]
BASEURL=http://www.microsoft.com
[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://www.msn.com
Now click Notepad's File menu and select Save to save it and close Notepad.
RENAME that New Text Document.txt file Microsoft.url - don't worry about warnings about changing the extension.
Now if you double click that fresh, new microsoft shortcut it will open.
The ONLY portion that is different when creating a new Internet Shortcut is the actual url (which in this example is http://www.microsoft.com
This one would be an Internet Shortcut for these CNET forums:
[DEFAULT]
BASEURL=http://forums.cnet.com
[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://forums.cnet.com
Now do you see how easy it is?
Hi, I did exactly as you instructed. Could it be something to do with the Folder Options in Control Panel under the File Types tab? I noticed that on my other PC, when I right click and choose New Shortcut and type in the url like www.nhl.com or something and hit Finish it works. And also when I right click this url shortcut icon, it shows the General tab and a Web Document tab and allows me to change the url right on the spot. I'm using Windows XP Home Edition on both PC's. So I still get this message:
[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://www.nhl.com/
Modified=2085A14163A9C8015C
coding.
When you right click on the shortcut and select properties on the General tab about half way to the bottom it should say MS-DOS name: - does that end with .url?
Sorry, so I went and created a new Webpage shortcut and when I right click, there is only the General tab but I don't see any MS-DOS label? Maybe I'm not understanding. Sorry.
I note I noticed that on my other PC, when I right click and choose New Shortcut and type in the url like www.nhl.com or something and hit Finish it works.
I missed the "other PC" previously so it appears that on one your Internet Shortcuts work and on the other they don't. Is that accurate?
If so you could export the complete InternetShortcut key on the computer that the shortcuts work on by opening regedit and browsing down to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut then while that key is highlighted click the file menu and export the key as a reg file (save it as InternetShortcut.reg ). Copy that file (InternetShortcut.reg) onto a floppy or thumb drive or via your network onto the computer that the internet shortcuts do not work on.
Once the InternetShortcut.reg file is on the problem computer you should be able to double click it to merge it into the registry - that should resolve the issue.
Alternatively you can click this link and save the file to your problem computer and run it if making use of the registry bothers you. Reg files are simple text files that can be opened in Notepad to see what they contain and what they are going to do. I will leave this file available for 48 hours and if you choose to download it do ensure that you automatically scan it for potential virus or malware BEFORE double clicking it to merge with your registry.
InternetShortcut.reg 3KB
Hi, I tried those steps on the "shorcut-not-working" PC and I could find InternetShortcut but when I opened regedit on the PC with the "shorcut-working", I right clicked on the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT but it didn't have any Internet Shortcut. Sorry
Hi, sorry. I found the InternetShorcut on the shorcut-working PC and exported it on a USB thumb drive and transfered it to the non-shorcut working PC and double clicked it and it merged it. But when I created a new internet shortcut and double clicked it, I get this dialogue box:
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.
Please help.
for the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.URL key and merge it into the registry of the broken PC.
i sent another post where I did find the Internet Shorcut for the PC where the creating Internet shortcut works, but once I exported it and named it as Internet Shortcut and transfered it by means of a USB drive to the other PC where the Internet-shortcut-right-click doesn't work, and merged it and as I was right clicking and creating a new Shortcut like www.hotmail.com and double clicked this Internet shortcut I just created, I get the message box below:
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Optiosn control panel.
created and imported the URL reg file I indicated you should also make and merge in this post:
