xp theme vs. classic theme

im currently using the classic look theme but i wanna have the xp look theme without decreasing my computer's performance. im using the classic look coz many computer forums recommend that having the classic theme will boost computer's performance. it's kinda true coz i noticed an increase in my computer's performance. but i kinda got bored looking at the old classic look.so i wanna switch back to the xp look theme while at the same time not decreasing my computer's performance.
really need expert's recommendations...thanks in advance guys!
my computer specs:
-intel P4 1.7ghz fsb 400mhz
-ecs p4vmm2 mobo
-480 memory
-32mb onboard video card (shared from the memory)
-40gb hdd ide

Vista's Aero is another story, but we're talking XP here. If you want to improve your system's performance, try increasing your RAM to about 1GB.

Different colors and the pages have a different style. As was mentioned, increasing RAM will give an immediate and noticable increase in performance.
RAM is really cheap today. You can visit Crucial.com and input the PC specs. They will recommend what will fit. I'll bet a 512 Meg stick will be about thirty bucks.
If this is still out of range, you can get a small increase in performance by closing applications running in the background that you don't need. Do a Google on Codestuff Starter and download this little program. It'll tell you what's running, and what program it belongs to. You can stop programs and even delete them.

As a side note, my first computer was a Compaq with 16 Meg of RAM. Yeah, back in the old days. I doubled the RAM and the 16 Meg stick cost over a hundred dollars. I just bought a 512 stick for my IBM ThinkPad and it was $29.95 at Crucial. And everything at Crucial has a lifetime guarantee. And they have pictures on how to install it.
Specific Themes wont effect performance but "Themes" do

While specific themes will not effect performance if you are using themes at all you are running with a higher memory foot print then the Windows Classic or if you go under the performance tab of the system control panel and set visual effects to "Best Performance".
So while saying that the XP theme does not effect performance is technically true, leaving out the fact that themes over all do have impact is kind of misleading. If you want the best performance out of your machine and do not have at least 1GB of memory (which you should) or more then you should set the visual effects settings to "Best Performance". Sure it won't look pretty but if your low on memory you'll get better performance out of it. Of course you could just go buy more memory which is your best course if your below 1GB.
On your ram setup

As the others stated adding more system ram will be better overall. However, a slight performance increase can be had if you can disable the on-board video, get a new video card that's at least 64mb or better, I suggest 128mb(mb can vary by card). Which in turn removes the old 32mb video sucking demands and allows the video to use its own ram if replaced video card. You have full access to system ram and any later added ram. If this is a laptop system, then disregard, just add more system ram. The above advice makes sense for a desktop system though.

You can get a good video card for around $50
Unless you are gaming this should be a sufficient upgrade to have you blazing along.

I use TuneUp Utilities and find it works well on my system.
It switched my computer to the XP theme instead of Classic which i usually prefer and find it much more responsive now.
Do have 1.25G of RAM
