Two Operating Systems Installed on Same Partition
by MomentsHaveYou - 2/28/08 3:44 PMI have two operating systems (Windows 2000 and Windows XP) installed on the same partition. How do I delete one of them? I have Partition Magic installed, if anyone has instructions using that program.

Even more so when we're talking two copies of Windows.
So just look for some program that can edit the boot menu, or boot.ini file -- I wouldn't recommend doing it by hand unless you know what you're doing -- and you can remove that.
You simply boot into the one you prefer ...

Usually this will be Windows or WINNT. To ensure you delete the proper Windows directory you can make use of the command prompt. Click Start | Run type in echo %windir% then press the enter key. The Windows Directory that will show up is the one for the OS you have booted to and thus the one you DO NOT want to delete.
Both Windows 2000 and XP make use of the Documents and Settings directory (folder) so I would recommend just leaving everything it it alone.
To finish up you edit the BOOT.INI file to remove the listing of the OS you deleted.

The best way is to change the "startup and recovery" setting. I.E. default to the OS you like then change the time setting to zero second. But if the harddrive space is what you are after then you best bet would be to reinstall. Just my 2 cents.

by froasier - 2/29/08 11:10 PM In reply to: Two Operating Systems Installed on Same Partition by MomentsHaveYouProbably your best plan is to back up your data and then format and reinstall one OS (I assume XP). At that point you can also easily partition the drive however you want. I once installed XP to the same partition as a Win98 installation for recovery purposes, and it rendered 98 useless, and was a mess overall (but got the job done, i.e. letting me back up the important data so I could format and clean install XP). The best thing to do is start fresh.
